Offshore Incorporated is a highly informational documentary expanding the awareness of a little known tax strategy brought on by big corporations and the wealthy upper class, to avoid paying their share of taxes. This “strategy” of avoiding tax through the use of offshore accounts, effects people worldwide. The film describes cities of people in third world countries who are stripped of medical, educational, and financial aid because corporations are stacking their wealth rather than paying their tax. The director Mark Donne, as well as film commentator Father William Taylor, bring forth a compelling argument on why this financial loophole is still legal, and question what can be done to stop it. For anyone who has brushed the term “tax haven” off their shoulder, I recommend maybe giving it another look by watching this controversial documentary Offshore Incorporated.

While Offshore Incorporated does tackle the vast topic of corporate tax avoidance, it also turns out be a profound character piece. Father Taylor is a vicar who is out to challenge a system dominated by large international corporations, for the benefit of his parish. This struggle gives the film an extremely personal element and unique perspective on the issue as well make it accessible to any audience regardless of if they have a passion for tax reform or not. As unlikely as it might seem, this film on taxes stands out as one of the most intimate documentaries in a long time so I highly recommend it.

Offshore Incorporated is a very informative documentary that perfectly contrasts the definition of Tax Avoidance from Tax Evasion. The film doesn’t hold back as it explains the reasons for why large companies and people of the richer class obtain offshore accounts in order to avoid paying their taxes; and how although it’s not illegal to do, still leaves lasting effects on various parts of the world. I’d recommend this film to anyone looking to gain useful knowledge on why certain parts of the world aren’t getting the funding they need to thrive, and how we— as a society—can help change that.
