Justina Machado to Star in Netflix Medical Drama From Carlton Cuse

Grey’s Anatomy is traditionally one of Netflix’s most-watched acquired programs, so it’s only natural that the streaming giant enters the medical procedural space on its own.

Netflix has handed out a series order to Pulse, what it says is its first procedural medical drama series. The series, which is created by Zoe Robyn (The Equalizer), is set at Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center as they navigate medical emergencies and revolves around Dani Simms, a young ER doctor who is unexpectedly promoted to chief resident amid the fallout of her own provocative romantic relationship. Justina Machado returns to Netflix after starring in its One Day at a Time update and stars as Natalie Cruz, a doctor who serves as chair of surgery and emergency medicine.

Robyn and Carlton Cuse (Lost, Jack Ryan, Netflix’s own Locke and Key) will serve as co-showrunners. Both will exec produce the series. Kate Dennis (The Handmaid’s Tale) is attached to direct and exec produce the first two episodes. Bradley Gardner, Emma Forman and Michael Klick will also exec produce.

Pulse marks Cuse’s latest streaming series and joins a résumé that also includes Amazon’s Jack Ryan, Apple’s Five Days at Memorial and Netflix’s Locke and Key. He’s best known for co-creating ABC’s Lost and Bates Motel, among scores of other linear credits.

Robyn, whose credits also include Hawaii Five-0 and Psych, is repped by WME, Kaplan/Perrone and Ziffren Brittenham. Cuse is with WME, Syndicate Entertainment and Jackoway Austen. Machado (The Horror of Dolores Roach) is with UTA, D2 Management and Goodman Genow.
