Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story creator Shonda Rhimes has given a promising update on the chances of the show returning for future seasons. As a prequel spinoff to the hit Netflix period drama Bridgerton, the six-episode historical drama focused on the rise to power of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (India Amarteifio) in the late 18th century. Rhimes served as the show's principal writer and executive producer, and Queen Charlotte earned positive reviews. The show's success, which is believed to have exceeded Netflix's expectations, led to clamors for further seasons.

During an interview with Variety, Rhimes discussed the show's future and refused to rule out the possibility of a Queen Charlotte season 2. However, the creator revealed a condition that the story must be right. Check out her comments below:

I feel like I’m having a conversation with Netflix! They ask me this question all the time! I’m trying to figure it out still. I don’t want to tell a story that doesn’t need to be told — do you know what I mean? I don’t want to make a second season of “Queen Charlotte,” and you’re going to be, like, “Well, that was not that great.”

Will Queen Charlotte Season 2 Happen?

Queen Charlotte Ended With Charlotte & King George III United.

Therefore, it would take some time before there is enough confidence to pursue another season for Queen Charlotte, but those odds are promising.

It makes sense why Netflix wants a season 2 of the hit spinoff. Like its principal series, Queen Charlotte drew strong streaming numbers, reaching the global top 10 as the most-watched English-language series and maintaining the no. 1 ranking for three weeks. The show reached its peak viewership at 158.68 million hours of viewing during its second week. Clearly, the show became a huge success similar to Bridgerton seasons 1 and 2, which currently rank as the two most popular seasons on Netflix ever.

On the other hand, Queen Charlotte ended with the royal couple united after facing obstacles at the beginning of their marriage. This particularly includes how the queen addresses the matter of King George's (Corey Mylchreest) mental health condition, which had been briefly hinted at in Bridgerton. The show happily concluded with Charlotte pregnant with her second child and together with King George. However, given where the prequel stopped with its story, this opens the door to explore more of the couple's marriage beyond this point.

Additionally, the show opened up subplots that could continue the spinoff. Younger Lady Danbury (Golda Rosheuvel) and a young Violet Bridgerton (Connie Jenkins-Greig) are featured in the series, showing how the two friends have a much deeper connection beyond their couple's matchmaking. Because of this, future seasons could focus on Lady Danbury's rise in society following her husband's death and Violet Bridgerton's own journey leading to the ton and marriage to her husband.

Here is a list of some cast members who could return for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story season 2.

While season 2 has yet to be officially renewed by Netflix, chances are likely that it can run in tandem with Bridgerton. However, a season 2 renewal would be based on whether Rhimes and the creative team can find the right story. Therefore, it would take some time before there is enough confidence to pursue another season for Queen Charlotte, but those odds are promising.
