Biography

Name

Name: Isabella of England. [1] [2] [3].
First daughter of Edward III, King of England and Philippa of Hainault. [4] [5]
styled Countess of Bedford - in right of her husband the Earl of Bedford.
Lady of the Garter [6]

Birth

Born: 16 June 1332 at Woodstock Palace, Oxfordshire, England. [1] [3]
Cawley notes that various chronicles give dates of 16 Feb or Mar or 16 Jun 1332 or 1334.[1] Using the wardrobe accounts of Edward III it is possible to determine that the correct date should be 16 June. [7] [3]

Marriage and Children

Married: Enguerrand VII, Seigneur de Coucy, son of Enguerrand VI Guines, Seigneur de Coucy and Katharina of Austria, on 27 July 1365 at Windsor Castle in Windsor, Berkshire, England. [1] [2]
Children of Enguerrand VII de Coucy and Isabella of England:
  • Marie de Coucy. Born say 1367 (estimate based on parents marriage). m. Henri de Bar, son of Robert I, Duc de Bar and Marie de France. She died in 1404.[8] [9]
  • Phillipa de Coucy. Born say 1367 (rough estimate based on parents marriage). She married Robert de Vere, Earl of Oxford, son of Thomas de Vere, Earl of Oxford and Maud de Ufford by 05 Oct 1376. The marriage was reputiated and they were declared divorced sometime in 1387; the divorce was then later declared void on 17 Oct 1389. She died in Oct 1411. [10] [11]

Death

Died: Died 5 October 1382 in England. [3] [12]
Date is the one given by Richardson. Cawley notes several other possibledates of death but does not give any sources including 15 Mar/4 May 1379 or 17 Jun/05 Oct 1382. [1] The Bedford section of Complete peerage stated she had died before May 1379. [13] However, in the Gynes section (Coucey family) the correct date is given. On 22 November 1382 orders were issued to the collectors of customs regarding a regarding a grant of land "late belonging to the King's aunt, Isabel, late Countess of Bedford, who d. 5 Oct. last past." On the same day executors were appointed to carry out the terms of the Countess' will. [12]
Buried: Greyfriars Church, Newgate, London. England.[1] [3] [12]

Why is Isabella's father (Edward Plantagenet of England) listed as "uncertain?" To my knowledge, I have never seen it written that there was any question of her paternity. Please provide clarification or have this removed if it is inaccurate. Thanks!

Is the uncertain father only because of the DNA issue?
