After three years, marriage of Titanic star Winslet hits iceberg

This article is more than 22 years old

As far as showbusiness weddings go, the marriage of Kate Winslet and her husband, Jim Threapleton, appeared to be one of the most stable celebrity unions.

But last night Winslet's publicist, Robert Garlock, announced their decision to separate, saying that no other parties were involved in what was an "amicable and respectful separation."

Despite the difference in their celebrity status, the couple appeared to have had one of the most stable relationships in showbusiness. They have a daughter, Mia, aged 11 months; and the actress, who starred in the film Titanic, never seemed to tire of describing their wedded bliss.

She had fallen "in love at first sight" with a "glorious looking boy" - Threapleton, an assistant director from Yorkshire - on the set of the film Hideous Kinky, shot in Morocco in 1998. Meeting him had helped ease the pain of the death from cancer in December 1997 of her former boyfriend, the EastEnders scriptwriter Stephen Tedre.

Winslet and Threapleton married in November 1998 in a down-to-earth ceremony at her family's local church, All Saints, in Reading, Berkshire. Shortly after she said in an interview with the Guardian: "I don't want to start talking about it, but believe me, before I met Jim I was very much, 'Oh I don't believe in marriage'... but we don't want to be without each other. Ever."

Winslet recently said the baby had strengthened their relationship but she admitted they had difficulties.

"There are highs and lows and at times it's tough," she said.

She is due to appear in Enigma, playing Hester Wallace in a tale of romantic intrigue among British code breakers during the second world war.
