Born in the north of England, Sir Tom Courtenay received his artistic education at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, where he took courses in drama.

His career debuts were on stage in England, before he landed his first role in Private Potter, a Finnish film by Caspar Wrede. He plays the role of Farder Coram, an advisor who helps Lyra Belacqua to read the alethiometer in her possession.

In 2013, the actor was hired by Dustin Hoffman in one of the pillar roles of Quartet, his first achievement, against veterans such as Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins or Michael Gambon. It is also found the same year in the credits of Gambit, English scam, a remake of An Extraordinary Hold-Up produced by Joel and Ethan Coen.
