The best part of my experience at the School of the Arts was the arts. Being able to substitute gym for something more interactive, where I learned many different cultural dances, was an advantage. Having pride of your major when doing performances is an accomplishing feeling. Although the arts prevailed, the toxicity of the school reached a peak at one point, and being there since middle school, I saw the negative changes and nothing being done about it. Advocating is complicated and sometimes brushed off, which makes the students upset. SOTA has taught me the minimum regarding college prep, and I feel that's common in many schools. I hope to see a change within the city school districts so the future generation has a chance and is not set up to fail.
Going to School of the Arts since 7th grade has taught me so much about the world. I’ve learned about different cultures and different ways people identify themselves. The diversity within Sota is different from many of the schools in the RCSD school district. We have people from all around the world. The cultural awareness is also another amazing part about our school, we have days where we are able to learn about different cultures and their traditions. Over the past year, the cafeteria has been trying to include different foods for the students and staff. I don’t feel different or uncomfortable because I’m the only person of hispanic descent in my school/class. I feel welcomed everyday when I walk in through the doors of School of the Arts.
SOTA isn't a "high school musical", but it isn't all that bad.
Pro: Very Diverse, art-oriented, immersed within your major, (some) dedicated faculty, number of classes available, nice scenery, & wide variety of extracurriculars
Con: The food isn't that good, not very athletic, misbehaving peers, rude faculty, prejudice, & many of the AP classes are only offered online.
