So who is Crystal Palace academy prospect Roshaun Mathurin? Let’s take a look

What position does Roshaun Mathurin play?

The Palace Academy player is an attacking player who predominantly plays on the right wing. Mathurin is versatile though as he can also play as a left-winger. He is quick, able to dribble on the ball and is not frightened to take on opposition defences. Although it’s the early stages of his career at the club, it feels like he fits the profile of a skilful winger, something that Palace have loved over the years with players like Wilfried Zaha, Yannick Bolasie and Michael Olise.

Why is Crystal Palace prospect Roshaun Mathurin known as Trialist B?

Mathurin has also been known as ‘Trialist B’ by the Crystal Palace fan base. This is due to the fact that he joined over the summer as ‘Trialist B’ and had to impress during the minutes he was given by the club in order to receive a contract from the club. In the end, he impressed in two trial appearances in which he came off the bench.

The games were against Manchester United U21s and Reading U21s, with Mathurin scoring against Manchester United. When Crystal Palace announced the signing of Mathurin, they even joined in on the fan nickname and posted a video with the caption: ‘No longer Trialist B’

In June 2023, it was announced by Tottenham that Mathurin was one of nine academy players to be released by the Premier League club. His release was mainly due to the fact that he suffered an ACL injury in 2021 and was never able to get back to his best. It looks like all he needed was a new club and he is on top form at the Eagles.

Roshaun Mathurin career stats so far

As you can see, the ACL injury clearly saw him struggle for a period at Spurs. He did show promise in the U18s and now he is showing promise for the Crystal Palace U21s. It is no doubt exciting to see a winger on good form in the academy. Meanwhile, 19 year-old Matheus Franca, who impressed on his debut, looks to also be a bright talent. The future is bright at Palace.
