"The Whales of August" is a peculiar and comforting must-see movie!

I first watched this movie about a decade ago and immediately loved it. Bette Davis who plays the character "Libby" was the reason I watched, but Lillian Gish, who plays Davis' sister "Sarah" stole the show. Davis at age 79, was not in good health and it showed. Gish, who plays the younger sister, is really 15 years older than Davis, and even though she was 94, she looks like she was Davis' age. That was one of the peculiar parts of this movie. There too was an awkward familiarity in Davis' mannerisms and speaking voice. She seemed to be trying to conjure up her character's personas from her earlier movies. "Margo Channing" in "All About Eve" "Charlotte Hollis" in "Hush, Hush sweet Charlotte" and the character "Jane Hudson" in "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane" (The latter two are my favorites) but instead of coming across as her usual commanding self, Davis' speech patterns were odd and halting. Enough so that it made her character "Libby" seem a little confused and disoriented, which made it just slightly uncomfortable to watch, but not enough to negatively affect the overall prominence of her role. Gish, by being delightfully charming and convincingly concerned for her sister and filling in any gaps left by Davis, saved Davis' role as "Libby" from becoming an irrelevant caricature. There are other heavy hitters in this movie. "Vincent Price" who plays "Nicholas Maranov. "Ann Sothern" as "Tisha" and "Harry Carey Jr." as "Joshua Bracket". This movie is set in the year 1954 in Maine on an actual coastal island named "Cliff Island" and begins with a flashback from decades ago with the characters "Libby" "Tisha" and "Sarah" as young women, calling to each other to come and see the whales. Later, as the movie fast-forwards to the scripts present time, you discover that the two sisters are estranged but "Libby" being infirmed needs her sister to help care for her which Gish does well. I love Gish's openness and verve as she goes about her daily tasks which includes caring for Libby who is blind. In Gish you see a lot of the history of Hollywood manifesting itself in her character. I was and am completely charmed by Gish's performance. Sothern plays Tisha, a dear friend to Sarah and visits the sisters and it's very clear that Tisha does not like Libby and is very critical of her. Carey plays an obnoxious handy man and Price plays a Russian ex patriot who has lost his place to stay when his friend dies and although the house belong to Sarah, Libby makes it clear that he won't be staying with she and her sister. At times, Davis' character is a little over the top with her dislike for Maranov. It didn't seem to fit the other characters opinions of Maranov, and Price and his character's reaction to Libby's disdain was so convincing that I couldn't help but wonder if that angst was not only part of the script but also the actual opinions each actor had for the other. Again it looked like Davis was trying to conjure up old personas to give drama to her lines but IMO it fell flat. In the end Libby and Sarah have a breakthrough. The scenery is shot on the actual island and is beautiful to see. Since I've purchased this video I've watched it 9 times and aside from the criticisms I have, which are really minor compared to the overall acting in this movie, I find "The Whales of August" to be a very charming movie and I very highly recommend it for all ages.

Put Vincent Price, Lillian Gish, Bette Davis, and Ann Sothern together on a rocky island in Maine and what do you have? A remarkable ensemble reflecting a nostalgic time in New England where gentility sometimes masked dysfunction. The story is character driven but the beautiful scenery is also a star. Fading, elderly sisters (one blind) try to make sense of their final years. A penniless, widowed former Russian aristocrat and an elderly, feisty busybody insert themselves into the predictable daily routine of the elderly sisters. Muted romance, jealousy, and cantankerousness show that old people still have strong feelings in spite of their seeming fragility. Lillian Gish, one of my favorite actresses, provides an insight into the trials of caring for an ungrateful sister whose narcissism would be unbearable for anyone but her. I was surprised how attractive this elderly cast is. Harry Carey, the youngster of the group in his 60's, brings comic relief to the the serious lives of the others with his noisy portrayal of a somewhat inefficient handyman who could use some fixing himself.

Excellent movie. I remember about 3 famous actors: Bette Davis, Lillian Gish, and Vincent Price. I heard about them sometimes until they passed away. Their performance is great. According to Wikipedia about the movie, I didn't know Bette Davis' health is about deteriorating. I thought Bette was coming back to do more acting but she was still sick. She looked fine by playing a blind sister named Libby in that movie.

Maine is a beautiful state. That's where the Logan sisters spent summers. They were eagered to watch whales coming in for many years but sadly, no more whales in their present time. They had wonderful memories of summer vacation there.

This poignant 1987 film was the culmination of an era. It was the last film of Lillian Gish, Ann Sothern, and director Lindsay Anderson. It was the last great performance of Bette Davis and Vincent Price, who previously worked together nearly 50 years earlier.

The film is totally real. It is set in the early 1950s, on a small Maine island where two elderly sisters have gone to vacation the summer away as they have since they were girls. There is s brief prologue in sepia where Mary Steenburgen plays Gish, Margaret Ladd (Falcon Crest) plays Davis, and Tisha Sterling plays her real life mother Ann Sothern who plays Tisha, a friend to the two old sisters.

Vincent Price plays a a former Russian aristocrat who has his eye on Lillian. Davis is blind and relys on her sister who she feels Price is trying to take away from her. There are great performances in this film superbly written by David Berry. It's all senior citizens. You won't find anyone younger than 70 in this film. It's about their life and how they live it at such an advanced age. Gish was 93 when she made this and had been acting since she was a child in the gay 1890s.

Great special features! The widescreen blu ray for the 30th anniversary looks amazing. There is an audio commentary with the producer as well as on location interviews with Gish, Davis, Price, Sothern, Harry Carey Jr., and the director.

There are also current interviews from Steenburgen, Ladd, and Sterling as well as snippets from the makers. Also a nine minute segment from a Malcolm McDowell video where he recalls his old friends from this film.

Finally, Tisha Sterling sings a song that celebrates the film.

It's simply brilliant. Sothern was nominated for am Oscar. The others should have been as well.

I have long loved this film. In what was to be the last movie starring both Lillian Gish and Ann Southern along with Bette Davis and Vincent Price the screen brings to life the play by David Berry. Set on the coast of Maine, two widowed sisters (Gish and Davis) face the declining years with opposite perspectives on the future and mutual memories of the past. A very tender story, well written and executed.

A minor classic

A moving film transferred solidly to the blu-ray hi-def format. Oddly, the performances are not altogether as smooth as one might have expected as the action takes place in short vignettes, juxtaposed with stunning scenes of the New England coastline, and these sometimes come across as rather staccato. Similarly, both Bette Davis and Lillian Gish are clearly very old indeed and don't quite command the acting skills that they once possessed. Ironically, on the extras the extended interviews with all the main players show that they were much more in possession of their faculties than the characters they represent. I suspect director Lindsay Anderson had quite a task making this small feature and did what he could with a not particularly easy cast - at least where Miss Davis was concerned. Still it was sufficiently interesting for me to order a rare copy of the theatrical play script on which the film was based, as its haunting quality has a fascinating, if somewhat depressing, allure. I had to order the Blu Ray from Amazon US and it was very well delivered to the UK by DPD then, unfortunately, Yodel took it to someone else's house a mile away from my own (with a totally different address) thus causing me great difficulty in tracking it down. Still, such is life with many 21st century service providers.
