Actor Kay Kay Menon started his acting journey in 1995 with Naseem and starred in several films subsequently. But, the actor feels it wasn’t until 2005, ten years after his debut, that he got recognised for his work. He believes it was his role of Vishnu Nagre in Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar that established him as a known face in the Hindi film industry.
In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Kay Kay was asked if Haider was the film that brought him into a mixed space of commercial and art house cinema. To this, Kay Kay replied, “I don’t think so. First of all, the genesis of the word commercial is from commerce. So, what has done well is commercial.”
The actor further added, “But I think that happened with Sarkar for me. With (Amitabh) Bachchan sahab being there. People had come to see Mr Bachchan, they got a bonus along with that. So, that is the place I actually got recognised in my career. After which I didn’t have to introduce myself as an actor. I could say that I am Kay Kay. So, that was the thing.”
Kay Kay has been a part of both commercial and parallel cinema, and after Sarkar, he never gauged his career in any way.
“After that, I have not really measured anything in terms of my career and I don’t have yardsticks to measure it as well. So, whatever is post facto after my act is over is something that is very speculative. I don’t get into it. For me, that’s for cinema pandits and trade experts to say. That’s not my job. I have done the so-called mainstream. I have done films with Akshay Kumar, and I have done everything,” said the actor.
Kay Kay is currently seen in The Railway Men which dramatises the events around the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, a catastrophic event that resulted in the deaths of over 2,000 people and affected more than 600,000 others. It features Madhavan as the Central Railways’ GM, who is determined not to abandon the people of Bhopal. Babil plays a railways worker, Kay Kay plays a station master and Divyenndu plays a bandit with a heart of gold.
