Hilarious and Controversial in Equal Measure

Jimmy Carr is back with a brand new Netflix stand-up special, and it’ll have you howling with laughter for the majority of the one-hour run time. It starts off reasonably steady with some quick jokes to get the audience warmed up, until Carr gets going with the proper material. And that material is some of the funniest stuff he has ever performed. There will be the usual calls to be cancelled, and as Carr points out himself in the special: “Good luck with that.”

People are becoming sick of being told what to laugh at, and that is why Jimmy Carr continues to be so popular, selling out shows around the country. He makes jokes about every topic that usually riles up the do-gooders, and you can see that he very much enjoys winding them up and challenging them to another onslaught of protests. What he has to say is all relevant in 2024, which makes it even funnier and poignant. 

The highlight is a clever routine that he performs on consent, where he takes on the role of someone trying to explain the ridiculousness of certain things, by using an audience member to aid him. It is hilarious, and it ends with a fantastic punchline. Jimmy Carr is too good at his particular trade to ever get cancelled, and there is very much the attitude that he doesn’t care if people try. His last stand-up show was slated for a certain joke he made, which has made it important that he raises the issue in his latest offering, similar to the way Ricky Gervais did so in his latest special. 

However, Carr does what great comedians do by poking fun at his critics, and he illustrates this in a number of clever jokes and one-liners. It’s one of the best stand-up comedy events of the year and shouldn’t be missed unless you are easily offended.
