Wicked Trailer Reveals First Listen To New Defying Gravity As Elphaba Goes To War With The Wizard Of Oz

Summary

  • Producer Marc Platt defends the decision to split Wicked into two parts, aiming to satisfy fans of the musical and avoid cutting songs.
  • Wicked: Part One trailer has been released, but doesn't mention the two-part structure.
  • Wicked: Part Two is set for release in 2025, arriving close to exactly one year after the first film.

Producer Marc Platt defends the choice to break up the Wicked movies into two parts. Based on the hit Broadway musical of the same name, Wicked is a film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz prequel, telling the story of sisters Elphaba and Glinda. Wicked stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and Keala Settle.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, producer Platt explains why Wicked is split into two parts. According to the producer, he and the team wanted to make a faithful adaptation that worked “to satisfy fans of the musical.” In the process, this would allow them to not cut out songs, or make an extra-long film. Check out the full quote from Platt below:

We didn’t want to end up making one four-hour movie and then cutting out songs. We want to satisfy the fans of the musical. Film allows you to create a place and a time—a university like Shiz, an extraordinary Emerald City governor’s mansion. There’s so much more to explore.

What Is The Plan For Wicked’s Release?

The trailer for Wicked: Part One was just released, giving the first look at “Defying Gravity” and the performances from the two leads. The trailer did not address the fact that Wicked was to be split into two parts. Nonetheless, the release plan for the film remains the same, with Wicked: Part Two coming next year, set for release on November 26, 2025.

The trailer for Wicked: Part One reveals a number of previously unseen characters, the colorful setting, story elements, and a major Dorothy change.

Though the Wicked movie was first announced back in 2012, it was not until 2022 when director Jon M. Chu revealed that the film adaptation would be split into two installments. As of now, it has still not been revealed when exactly Wicked: Part One will cut off for Wicked: Part Two to continue. A logical place might be the intermission of the stage show, which ends with the show-stopping number “Defying Gravity.”

Wicked: Part One is arriving on November 27, 2024, and Wicked: Part Two is hitting theaters almost a year later on November 26, 2025.

As Wicked continues closer to its November release date, it will be interesting to see what news comes out about how the adaptation will function as a first part. Luckily for Broadway fans, it seems from Platt’s statement that all of the show’s original songs will be there. There will likely also be elements added, including a potential cameo from Dorothy and Toto. Hopefully, the changes will do well for the film as Chu attempts to adapt such a beloved musical.
