Jack the Ripper 「ジャック・ザ・リッパー Jakku Za Rippā pā」 is a supporting protagonist in Black Clover. He is the Captain of the Green Preying Mantises, one of the nine squads of Magic Knights in the Clover Kingdom who are tasked with protecting the kingdom.
He was voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in the Japanese version, and by Justin Cook in the English dubbed version.
Personality[]
Jack the Ripper, befitting a character named after the infamous serial killer, is a bloodthirsty and savage man who loves fighting strong opponents and cutting new things, be them magic, objects or even people. One particular habit he has is running his tongue accross the his blades when he is particularly excited at the prospect of battle or execution. He is constantly grinning and displays traits typical of the stereotypical anime villain who loves murder for the sake of it.
One of the most sadistic characters in Black Clover, Jack the Ripper apparently enjoys intimidating and threatening others, though he is not always able to follow through on such claims. Jack comes across as threatening even when no intending to such as when he praised Finral Roulacase for being excellent support during the battle with the elves. Not even other captains are immune to these threats, such as when Jack threatened Yami on numerous occasions, though this seems to be more out of respect or rivalry than malice. When left in charge of the captured Eye of the Midnight Sun members who were forced to do clean up work as a part of their punishment.
Jack the Ripper's behavior, fondness for cutting living tissue, nasty personality, and disregard for most things has labeled him a worse individual than the Eye of the Midnight Sun by Guedre Poizot, particularly as he threatened to cut them (prisoners and criminals of war) when they were merely reading the Newspaper to keep up to date with events.
Nevertheless Jack does seem to have some degree of responsibility, and possibly even patriotism, as a Magic Knight captain, and unlike Yami has no known track record of neglecting his duties and responsibilities that comes with his position, attending important meetings, and public appearances without fuss. He even criticized Geudre Poizot for his betrayal.
Being born a commoner Jack has a greater sense towards money than the other Magic Knight Captains, and was quite alarmed that his pay was cut in light of the kingdom needing additional funds post Elf-attack.

Yami Sukehiro[]
Out of all of his fellow Magic Knight Captains, Jack most often interacts with Yami, though the two often trade banter they appear to have more of a rivalry than any sort of malice at each other and they often complete in mundane activities such as drinking alcohol or running food stands. Usually their interactions are little more petty squabbles and empty threats and retorts, sometimes ignoring enemies or imminent danger around them to try and one up each other in banter.
Yami wasn't exactly thrilled that one of his spells had similar properties to Jack's slash magic, and boasted at getting a higher amount of stars recognized in the festival than Jack, much to Jack's chagrin. However Yami is perfectly able to tolerate and work with Jack when the need arises such as during the crisis where the Elves attacked the kingdom.
History[]
Jack hails as a commoner, at some point he became a Magic Knight, presumably through the Magic Knight selection exam, and as he is a commoner he would have become a knight after Zara Ideal, the first commoner to join the Magic Knights. Eventually he would be granted the rank of captain and either succeeded or began the Green Preying Mantis squad.
Resurrection of the Elves[]
Marx Francois witnesses Patri and Julius Novachrono battle and alerts the Magic Knights, Jack included, though his reaction is not shown it seems likely that he made his way to the capital or was already in the area.
Jack was one of the few high ranking Magic Knights to not be possessed by an Elf, and was in close proximity to the castle when the Elves possessed their reincarnations.
Abilities & Powers[]
As a Squad Captain for the Clover Kingdom's Magic Knights Jack is one of the strongest mages in the Clover Kingdom's military force and leads a dedicated force of similarly capable mages. Though not the smartest of the captains, Jack is perceptive enough to notice things quite quickly and his adaptability makes him and unpredictable opponent.
Jack has shown an impressive degree of dexterity, agility and strength for such a lanky man. With the aid of reinforcement magic these are greatly amplified and he is able to dodge the extremely dangerous Ratri's spacial magic close range, but even without reinforcing his physical abilities Jack was capable of keeping up with the extremely fast Vetto.
Of note was that Jack and Yami with support of Final were capable of defeating multiple reincarnated elves who possessed Golden Dawn elites with minimal effort, and that he was able to overwhelm the reincarnated Fana, one of the Apostles of the Sephirot and strongest members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun (though no longer having Salamander made her weaker than when she fought the Black Bulls in the Witches Forest and Nozel Silva previously).
Magic[]
Jack possesses the unique magic Slash Magic, magic that grows long blades at his wrests and allows him to cut things at a distance. Slash Magic is unlike any other magic shown in the series and as a result it is very difficult for enemies to grasp and
Slash Magic has the unique feature of adapting to his opponent's abilities and magic and while some are more complicated than others Jack will eventually be able to slice them no matter what. After numerous of his slashes his magic eventually became able to cut through Spacial magic.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Jack the Ripper may in fact me a moniker or epithet as opposed to his actual name as the ripper part matches his abilities.
- Jack the Ripper like rambling incoherently at bars and the pleasant feeling of cutting things.
- Jack is one of the few characters and one of only three captains to not have had their grimoires features as a cover for a volume, despite appearing before or with more frequency with captains that have.
- The manifestation of Slash Magic bears a resemblence to the anime's protrayal of the move Leaf Blade from the popular JRPG franchise Pokemon. Yuki Tabata is a big fan of pokemon, and was playing Sun/Moon during the portion of the manga where the Elves were attacking the capital. One of Yuki Tabata's editors believes that Pokemon was a big influence on Black Clover.
- The characteristic Jack the Ripper is an allusion to both the infamous serial killer who became his namesake, and the titular protagonist in Jack and the Beanstalk. His past is also a reference to the titular protagonist from Jack the Giant Slayer.
