Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 16th, 2024) – The Mountaineers won tonight's contest 12-7 after rallying for a memorable ten run inning in the top of the eighth inning. With the win Mount St. Mary's has clinched a postseason spot in Pomona, N.Y.
The Mountaineers went up early in this one after opening the game with two runs.
Scott Seeker started us off with a double through the right side, advancing
Evan Smith to third base. Consecutive ground outs advanced and scored the runners to give the Mount an early 2-0 lead.
The Peacocks exchanged the runs in the second and fourth innings to knot the game off a ground out and a sacrifice fly.
Scoreless middle frames brought us to the bottom of the seventh knotted up at two. The Peacocks broke it open with five runs on two hits and a fielding error.
The Mount responded quickly after erupting for ten runs in the top of the eighth inning to regain the lead. Seeker opened the scoring with a two RBI double to right field scoring Smith and
JT Landwehr. A few hits and a walk later,
David Stirpe ripped an RBI single to center field scoring
Tyler Long.
Aiden Tierney kept the bats hot with a two RBI double to left field to take the lead.
Evan Smith followed with a two RBI single to center while Seeker ripped a two RBI double to left field the next at bat to cap off the inning, 12-7. The Mountaineers answered with ten runs and seven hits in clutch time to clinch a playoff berth.
Deven Sheerin took to the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning to close out the win for the Mountaineers. The freshman threw two sensational innings at perfect standard, allowed zero runs, zero hits, zero walks, while punching out five of the six batters he faced.
