A very dumb question about Peeta's hijacking - when did it start?

Mockingjay

i remember early in the book/movie he seemed slightly more stable and more like himself, especially when talking about Katniss - he definitely wasn't speaking as if he thought she was a mutt. Was he being tortured in other methods before, and Snow didn't start the actual hijacking until later on (probably to make sure he was already weakened?)

The answer is probably somewhere in the book but I couldn't find the answer just from skimming.

I don't think it started until after the first interview. He ends the first one with a sarcastic remark about how he's going to "build another hundred card houses" once he is taken back to his "quarters". His wording makes it sound like he still has a regular room rather than a prison cell and is simply being kept bored and isolated rather than tortured.

Katniss theorizes later that this first interview was filmed mere days after the Quarter Quell. Snow wanted to get some quick footage that made it look like Peeta was being treated well before he started in on the long torture cycle. The torture had definitely already begun by the time of the second interview.

Ah, i think that’s what I was missing! That interview was pre-recorded so it looks like a “quick decline” but he was actually being brainwashed for most of the time.

It's never stated, just Katniss noting his physical condition deteriorating thorough his interviews.

If I had to guess, Peeta revealing that the Capitol was about to bomb 13 was the last straw to Snow, and that's when he ordered the hijacking to begin.

Yeah, that’s what I always assumed too, but I wasn’t sure if that was obvious within the subtext of the book or not. I always felt like I was missing something clear bc I never knew for certain!

The highjacking already started before that. During this interview, Katniss notices that Peeta's eyes look crazy, that it's like he's trying to fight something within him. She can see the worlds he's saying are painful for him to say. He's fighting it.

It’s not a dumb question. I was wondering the same because it is stated everywhere that Peeta was hijacked for weeks. But there wasn’t that much time between Peeta’s warning and Peeta’s rescue which we’re to assume that’s when he was likely hijacked. Idk man maybe it’s just a bit of a plot hole
