- Ana S.B.Belgrade, Serbia38 contributionsA definite place to visit but a tiring experienceThis is the main entrance in to the Dubrovnik Old Town. A very busy location as it sits near the bus station and cruise ship bus drop off point. Pile gate is just so busy, didn’t really want to spend too much time there. While Dubrovnik is a beautiful city with a rich history, the high volume of tourists also during shoulder season can make it difficult to fully enjoy the sights and sounds. We hope that in the future, the local authorities will take steps to mitigate overcrowding and create a more comfortable experience for all visitors.Visited May 2023Written May 29, 2023

A nice tip is to make a left once you cross the bridge and enter the town from below next to the kids playground. It's what the locals do and how to avoid the large crowds.Visited June 2023Written June 11, 2023
- SnowyShastaPortland, Oregon2,309 contributionsCrowded but impressiveThe Pile Gate is the main entrance into the walled city / old town. It opens up to the west, to the biggest part of the more modern city, as well as the cruise ship port. It was very crowded most of the time we were there, with several tour groups usually standing just inside learning about the city. The entrance to the gate is grand, with a large stone bridge crossing into an archway, with a statue of St. Blaise (the patron saint of Dubrovnik) over it. Once inside, there's a relatively large area with ramps and stairs where the tour groups congregate and you can see the city walls above. It's a grand but definitely crowded entrance - we only stayed a couple minutes and then headed farther into the city itself.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 22, 2023
- CatharineBOttawa, Canada1,613 contributionsGrand entrance to Old TownThe main entrance to Old Town, busy Pile Gate (the name derived from Greek word pylaj meaning gate), used to have a wooden drawbridge which was pulled up at night to prevent unwelcome guests entering the medieval, walled city. The drawbridge was replaced by a stone bridge from 1537. The bridge crosses a moat which is now a green space. Pile Gate or “Vrata od Pila” is one of the two main gates in this medieval walled city and is the main entrance into the fortified Old Town of Dubrovnik. It is very interesting to see the fortification and the size of the massive city walls when viewed from the top of the wall. The Pile Gate, built in the mid-16th century on the western side of the walls, is a strong defensive structure built on different levels. It looks like a tower that connects two bridges located above the moat of the walls and leads to a second internal door. In a niche above the oval arch stands a small statue of St. Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik. He appears to be cradling Dubrovnik in his arms. From this gate there is also a nice view of the Lavrijenac fort. Of course we had to take a Game of Thrones tour and we learned that Pile Bay was one of the most used Game of Thrones Dubrovnik filming sites. The overall backdrop was used for the Blackwater Bay battle scenes. The stone walkway at the bottom is where Sansa and Shae stood and spoke of the ships sailing by...fantasizing of where they were headed. The beach in the middle is where we watched the departure and return of Myrcella. Going through the Pile Gate we entered a completely different world. Located right next to the deep blue sea, this neighborhood is a great place to walk, and take picture after picture of the old red tile houses, and the small, winding streets like mazes. The area has also been recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site. After we passed through the gate, we found a lively little square surrounded by several landmarks. To our left, was a steep staircase that lead up to the imposing Minceta tower. This was our starting point for our walk along the wall.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 4, 2023

You walk along a little bridge that you can imagine was once above a moat to access the gate. Pile Gate is fairly close to the Tourist Office and the area where most of the tour buses leave from. There are also restaurants and shops near the gate. It is worth a visit.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 17, 2024

The bus from our Princess Cruise ship dropped us off right in front of the Pile Gate, which is the main entrance to the Dubrovnik Old Town. We weren’t on a tour, but this is apparently a meeting place where all the tour guides meet their tour groups, because it was very busy and crowded. Because of the crowd, there wasn't much of an opportunity to closely examine the gate or entrance. Constructed in 1537, the gate had a moat-like trench with an old-timey wooden drawbridge which was pulled up at night to prevent outsiders or intruders from entering the city. Now days, the bridge is always down and the gate open. Recently the gate has also served as a filming location for the Game of Thrones series, making it a favorite place for visitors to stop for a photo op. After you pass through the main gate, you can continue straight on to the Stradum (Main Street of the Old Town) or take the nearby stairs and climb to the top of the ancient wall that circles the old city. We choose to climb and walk around the top of the wall, exploring the city from above before going into the city itself on the ground level. It took about two hours to go completely around the wall, but it was a fantastic experience. (PaM)

Built in 1537 and derived from the Greek word "pylaj" (meaning gate).
In medieval times it used to have a wooden drawbridge that was pulled up every evening.
Above the entrance you see the statue of Sveti Vlaho, the patron saint of Dubrovnik.

We visited the Old Town of Dubrovnik a number of times during our recent holiday in the region.
Although there are other gates entrances this 15th century gateway is the most famous and used, as result it can be rather busy.
We accessed the Old Town through this gate which was reached by walking over a stone bridge, this once spanned a moat, which is no longer there.
Above the gate is a statute of Saint Blaise (Sveti Vlaho) the patron saint of Dubrovnik. The Feast of Saint Blaise is celebrated each year on the 3rd of February.
The statue stands in between the remains of the old drawbridge access to the Town. It is long gone and was replaced by the stone bridge that is there today.
Having passed through the gate we walked down the steps, there is also a ramp, which took us to the Stradun, the Town’s main street.

This is the main entrance in to the Dubrovnik Old Town. It is very interesting to see the fortification and the size of the massive city walls here and consider that it has been there since 1537. Although it is now gone, you can easily imagine the draw bridge that once was there. There is a statue of St. Blaise there and then great maps of the city layout hung on the wall. This entrance takes you right to the main street of the city, the Stradun. First thing you come to is a great fountain which, like most fountains in the city, is fed by water from the surrounding hills so it is quite pure and you can fill your water bottles from it.

This is the most popular entrance to the Old Town of Dubrovnik. It’s like you are entering Disneyland. You can see the tourist descending on the city by 9am once the cruise ships start dropping off busloads or people.
It’s still an impressive entrance and At Blaise is over the door to bless and welcome you. This entrance drops you at the beginning of the Stradum. It’s a great place to start your tour/exploration of Dubrovnik. Enjoy!!!

There are traffic signs dividing the tourist masses entering and returning at the narrow main gate to the historical centre of town. Already in June this year Dubrovnik has been visited by a record number of people. Luckily there are many beautiful places to see besides the over crowded Old Town.

Pile Gate or “Vrata od Pila” is one of the two main gates in this medieval walled city. The other one is Ploče gate (Vrata od Ploča). Pile gate was built in 1537. It is more grand as compared to Ploče gate which was built before the Pile gate. Pile Gate is located on the Western side of the Old City walls. More people pass Pile Gate more than the other two gates, Ploče gate & Buža gate. Outside the Pile gate are buses, taxis, restaurants, gelato shops, parks, etc.

Yes, I did, it fast and much cheaper than a Taxi, but you have to walk about 150 meters to the gate.

What is the procedure for wheelchair visitors to the city walls of old Dubrovnik? I heard that I enter the city bus in the middle. Do I buy the tickets from a tobacco shop or am I free or what?

Hi
Going through the city is free, but getting on the wall you have to purchase a ticket and there are some stairs which is difficult to get a person up in a well chair.

I am sure they would take euros. I do not have a cost, but don't feel it would be very much. I cannot help further as we took a bus to Dubrovnik then caught a local bus to the Pile Gate and it was very inexpensive.

I can't add much more to what others have said. But...
From what I remember we did walk down that way. It is relatively easy walking from the Bus Stop down the main street in the centre of the old town, then at the bottom of that it looks like you turn off to the left according to Google Maps. I think that you may encounter a few steps along your route but towards the end but mostly there are sensible ramps. There are cobbles though so be sure of your footing in the wet as they can be slippy.
