So Masterdisk mastered this digitally only for Germany and France? No other countries used a digitally sourced Masterdisk lacquer?

I think it's the opposite. I think they were all digitally mastered. I have said for years that this album has a "digital" sound even though I was repeatedly told it was all analog. The predominant belief is that Dire Straits did not go digital until Brothers In Arms. I know that album was completely DDD, whereas this album might be a hybrid, but I do not think it sounds fully analog. Compare it to Making Movies before it. That has an analog sound.

Weirder still, some of these French and German copies (like this one) say "Digital RECORDING" on the labels. Maybe they were using that phrase interchangeably with "Digital Mastering," but they mean different things. And I would be even more inclined to say it sounds like a digital recording (to some extent, maybe not entirely) than simply digital mastering.

So glad I sought something more dynamic than the Mofi. They've done an amazing job with most of the Dire Straits titles but I thought the noise floor was too high on Love Over Gold so I went looking for the absolute best experience one can have with this album. And this is frankly better than I could have imagined. One of the best sounding records in my collection and one you should scrape around for.

Decent pressing. Needed proper cleaning before first playing, didn't look clean after unboxing. Very low surface noise sometimes on very quiet passages. Two or three loud pops on track A1. This is my fourth purchase of the album, and the best so far. The first purchase being from the Soviet Union...long time ago...

To my ears this copy has more energy, more dynamic than my original UK Vertical and Canadian Vertical copies while still being reasonably quiet. Just listen to Telegraph Road, the top end can really belt out energy (and airy!) these guys really rock hard. Unlike newly remastered offering this copy doesn’t “smooth out” top end, doesn’t do bloated bass, that makes huge difference for the better.

Never heard this record all the way through until recently. Knopfler is a guitar player that plays with so much feeling. Musical genius. Can’t go wrong with owning this one. Highly recommended.

Have to add to the negative reviews about this pressing, surface noise unacceptable for a new record. Cleaning on my Project machine hasn't helped. Ruins the many quiet passages of the music. Disappointing for a Rhino release.
