Michael Robertson received two consecutive life sentences for the murder of Akia Eggleston and her unborn child, according to the Baltimore City State’s Attorney's Office.
When 22-year-old Eggleston did not show up for her baby shower on May 7, 2017, her family reported her missing.
She was 8 months pregnant at the time with her child Anubis Robertson.
In February 2022, Eggleston's disappearance was upgraded from missing persons to a homicide investigation by police, and murder charges were pressed against Robertson.
He was also charged with the death of his unborn child.
Prosecutors claim Robertson deceived Eggleston into thinking they were moving in together and preparing to build a life together. Eggleston allegedly pulled off a complex fraud including a false move-in address, which resulted in Eggleston taking out a loan for the down payment on the house.
According to investigators a review of Robertson's Google search history revealed 18 distinct searches regarding trash pickup, landfills or dumpster pickup in Baltimore City. Specifically, "where does Baltimore city trash go when picked up?" Investigators determined trash from the dumpsters is picked up several times a week and transported via railcar to a landfill in Northern Virginia.
Robertson was found guilty of the murders in July of 2023.
Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan Bates released the following statement on the sentence on Wednesday afternoon:
“This sentence ensures that Michael Robertson will no longer be a threat to the safety of others and will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the egregious violence he inflicted upon Akia Eggleston and her unborn child,” said State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates. “My prayers are with Ms. Eggleston’s family, who had to wait such a long time to see justice done. It was the vigilance of our Homicide Division, ASA Kurt Bjorklund, the Baltimore Police Department, and our partners in law enforcement, including Missing Persons and the FBI, that made this conviction possible. My gratitude is with them for ensuring that this defendant was held accountable.”
