2022 Toyota Tacoma Expert Review

Kelly Lin

As the best-selling midsize pickup in the U.S. for more than 15 years running, the Toyota Tacoma is obviously doing something right. Its sharp looks, reputation for reliability, and strong value proposition continue to lure in buyers. The Tacoma is not without its flaws, however, and there's more competition now than ever before. For 2022, the midsize truck shakes things up with a revised Trail Edition.

Check out our separate page on theToyota Tacoma TRD Pro.

  • Trail Edition receives several updates, including increased suspension lift (1.1 inches up front and 0.5 inches in the rear), improved approach and breakover angles, standard rear locking differential, off-road skid plates from TRD Off-Road grade, bronze 16-inch TRD wheels, Toyota grille with bronze lettering, new available hood graphics, and a Lunar Rock exterior color option. It will be offered exclusively in Double Cab 4x4 configuration.
  • Updated Tacoma TRD Pro debuts

When we reviewed the 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, we were impressed with its off-road capability. Thanks to its Fox shocks and the smooth power delivery of its V-6 engine, the Tacoma tackles everything from rocks to soft sand with aplomb while keeping the cabin comfortable for those inside. The truck is pretty quiet on the road, too. Unfortunately, despite upgrades for the 2020 model year, the Tacoma TRD Pro still suffers from some brake dive. When it comes to other Tacoma models, we've lamented the truck's stiff ride and underpowered engines.

Toyota improved upon the Tacoma's dated cabin for 2020, adding a new 10-way driver's power adjustable seat with lumbar and seat height adjustment, making the seating position a little less awkward. We also appreciate the Multi-Terrain Monitor for easier off-roading; we just wish the camera had a higher resolution. Despite a few helpful new features, there's no getting around the Tacoma's cramped cabin and narrow bed. We understand why this truck is so successful, but a rival truck may be a better bet if you're not loyal to the Toyota brand.

The 2022 Tacoma comes standard with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine making 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can select between RWD and AWD, but a six-speed automatic is the only transmission option.

An available 3.5-liter V-6 ups the ante with 278 hp and 265 lb-ft, and offers a choice between RWD and AWD. Six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions are available.

Fuel economy numbers top out at 20/23 mpg city/highway with the four-cylinder engine and 19/24 mpg with the six-cylinder.

Outdoorsy customers may gravitate to the Tacoma Trail Edition. Based on the SR5 grade, and available only in 4x4 double cab configuration, the Trail Edition features a lockable bed storage compartment to keep your gear safe. In the bed, there's also a 120V power outlet. A driver's side storage compartment serves as a cooler in a pinch.

The Trail Edition promises beefed-up off-road performance, too. For the 2022 model year, Toyota lifted the front end 1.1 inches and the rear by half an inch, and the truck benefits from improved approach and breakover angles. Special bronze exterior accents help the truck stand out from other Tacomas.

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma earned four stars overall from NHTSA, including four stars in the front and rollover tests and five stars in the side crash test. In IIHS testing, the 2022 Tacoma extended cab and crew cab models got Good scores in every test but the passenger-side small overlap front test.

Like other Toyotas, the 2022 Tacoma comes standard with important safety features. These include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and auto high beams.

MT Score

Based on performance, value, MPG, interior space, and more, this score reflects MotorTrend’s exhaustive evaluation process. Scores can only be compared to other cars in the same class. A 7.0 rating represents average performance.
7.2/10

Old is as old does in the Tacoma. Ancient underpinnings lead to segment-worst performance, tech, and design scores. However, decent efficiency and proven reliability are factors, as is a top value rating.
