Mother’s Day 2025 and 2026

China has a traditional date for Mother’s Day on its ancient lunar calendar, but most people simply observe it on the second Sunday of May as in the West. Mother’s Day is not a public holiday in China, but it is observed by many.

The modern tradition migrated to mainland China from neighbouring SARs of Macau and Hong Kong, especially after 1979.

Traditionally, Chinese sons and daughters give their Mums a hemerocallis flower for Mother’s Day, but many now gift them carnations or forget-me-nots instead.

Other gifts, special visits and greetings, a festive meal that gives Mum a break from her usual routine, and other expressions of respect and affection are also common.
