Did they play any originals that didn’t make it on any album?
Is every Weir/Barlow and every Hunter/Garcia original song included on one of their studio or live albums? Including solo albums.
Here's a link to every song that never got a studio album release.
https://whitegum.com/nosturec.htm
Bertha, He’s Gone, Jack Straw, Mr Charlie, Tennessee Jed, Brown Eye Women, Ramble on Rose, Wharf Rat
That could’ve been a damn fine studio album in 72’-73’
Although Bertha, and Wharf Rat on S&R could almost be considered album cuts since they overdubbed vocals and organ just like you would for a normal studio version. Tbh I’d like to hear what albums like Terrapin and Shakedown would’ve sounded kind had they approached it that way
That's true of all the Europe 72 tunes too
That's why when people say that's the best live dead album I cringe
It may not be their best live release, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t fucking great and probably the best way to get new people into listening to the Dead. For me, Skull and Roses and Europe ‘72 were my gateway into their whole world.
That Bertha on S&R was literally the first Dead song that I had heard (aside from randomly hearing Touch of Grey every once or twice on the radio) and was what originally got me hooked on them. I had discovered the Allman Bros about a year before and had started venturing into jam band territory, but my freshman year of college I decided to see what this “Grateful Dead” band that I heard so much about could do. The first chords of the Bertha intro started up, and the rest is history.
Workingman’s Beauty (the album that never was but could have been)
Side one Bertha He’s gone Tennessee Jed Mr Charlie
Side 2 Brown eyed women Jack straw Wharf rat Ramble on rose
Yea drops right into BEW on side two, with a kick ass “Goodbye mama and papa!” Closer👌
All those plus, Chinatown Shuffle, Two Souls in Communion, & Empty Pages
No Phil songs? No Childhood's End nor Wave to the Wind?
Yeah, I'm not sure its complete.
If they ever were recorded, Phil would not allow them to be released because at the time of So Many Roads, he was planning more studio albums with his Friends, and was considering re-recording those two.
I have a feeling they were recorded in 93, but Phil appropriated those reels and has probably forgotten about them by now, has he ever even played them post-Dead? Maybe one day Grahame will find them and put them in circulation.
Most of these had official live releases tho
This guy and his website rocks. He never saw the GD and worked for 10 Downing Street in IT. Helped me learn the entire cannon starting at age 48. God Bless him...
wow
No my brother esau
Most of the late songs. Easy answers, Lazy River, Corrina, Matilda, Eternity, Liberty, So many roads. Also pretty much every Europe 72 song
OP specifically included live albums. That covers E72 and Ready Or Not. I’ll leave off all the other box sets, Dick’s and Dave’s Picks.
The later Phil songs are not released - Wave to the Wind, Childhood’s End and If the Shoe Fits.
Ah I thought he just mean Studio
I believe Matilda, Matilda is by Harry Belafonte so not an original GD song.
Europe 72 is on Spotify, I own one of the Europe 72 suitcase
Yes I didn’t see OP say live albums when I commented
Ah forgot about the late songs. I was considering Europe 72 one of their live albums though!
Day Job
Was gonna say this too! Song doesn’t get enough play. It’s silly AF but I like it.
That shit gets me going when I’m not feeling it on the commute
That’s a perfect time to listen to it. Keep your day job till your night job pays!
8 day hour
😂
Ramble On Rose never got on an album.
I don't think Bertha did either.
There are a few more but can't think off hand..
Mason’s Children is the top of this list for me.
They recorded 'What'll you raise' for Go To Heaven but it never was released...http://www.deaddisc.com/songs/Whatll_You_Raise.htm
Love this song. Forgot about that one. This just reminded me of another great deep cut called ‘You Got to Know’
A couple of years ago they released this Ready Or Not album which, in a parallel dimension, would've been their next studio album. All of these tunes were widely played but never recorded in studio.

Man, I forgot all about Easy Answers. That song was awful.
that list leaves inexplicably leaves out all of Phil's more recent original songs-Wave to the Wind, If the Show Fits, Childhoods End
Oh, there’s an explanation.
Not sure if this belongs in this discussion, but there was a song called Equinox which was recorded for Terrapin Station (I think) but never released and afaik, never performed live.
Yes, Equinox is an interesting tune. You can hear it here.
Also check out Passenger from these sessions.
AKA, At The Mercy of a Fool
Hell, for that matter, Hunter sketched out Terrapin Part II to some degree over the years, but it certainly never was touched by the Dead. Idk if Hunter ever took a stab at recording it, or just worked out the lyrics and structure on paper.

Believe It or Not?
Yes
Day Job
Not an original but California Earthquake was one of the last good songs, and was considered the title track of the album that never was.
The classic epic Keep Your Day Job, sadly, never made it on In The Dark. It was a banger, lemme tell ya.
Found it! Same site as the other link.
"This is a list of Grateful Dead songs not (yet) released on CD in either live or studio versions."

Check out Revolutionary Hamstrung Blues, original, lyrics by Bobby Peterson who did Unbroken Chain, performed once in I think’84 in Maine, and actually a good song imo.

Mason’s Children?
I’ve always loved ”Way To Go Home”. I’m sad they didn’t get to make a studio album with Vince Welnick before Jerry’s passing.
Mason's Children should have been on Workingman's Dead but was cut for some reason. It's the same vibe lyrically and seems like it would have fit pretty well. I think the album could have used another faster more rocking song, and it had a jam that could be extended, as proven at least once. But who knows? Maybe the lyrics were a little too hokey, like "The Mason's Children cooked the stew and clean up when the feast was through".
Clementine is one of my favorite tunes. It makes more sense as a live jam number though.
Gentlemen Start Your Engines (Brent)
Believe it or not
Mason’s Children?
I guess I just never noticed since I basically only listen to live shows that Jack Straw is not on a studio album. Crazy as that is one of their more popular songs.
Check out Hornsby’s studio version. A little different flavor but REAL good.
I loved that. Has a sound that makes me nostalgic for a time I never even lived in. I checked out the Madman Across the Water (Elton John) on the same album and it’s real good as well. Hornsby has range and it’s not just the name of his band.
Agreed- the guy is a little underrated, dare I say something like that. Glad you liked it!!
The Jack Straw on E72 is as close as we’ve got to a studio recording. Personally, I consider the original E72 album and SkullFuck to be essentially studio albums where the foundation tracks happened to be recorded at live concerts, because the recordings were overdubbed to shit, the audience is as edited out as possible, and there is an emphasis on new or previously unreleased songs, or new arrangements of old songs (though they’re still very enjoyable listens).
Bertha and The Eleven come to mind
California Earthquake?
It's a cover
I believe there was a download on etree several years ago.
Rough studio sketches of the new, at the time, songs.
It was called California Earthquake Sessions?

Equinox was a dropped song for Terrapin Station. Never played live either, but rehearsals exist.
"The amount we set was nothing compared to the amount we didn’t set. There are a lot of songs that still deserve to be set" -- Jerry Garcia on Hunter/Garcia songs
Lol
Mason's Children Clementine
There's a bunch, Jack Straw is one that comes to mind (as far as classic/mainstay originals) that I'm pretty sure was never on a studio record. I'm sure pretty much everything saw at least one or two versions released on official live releases over the years though.
