Collaboration between John Cale, who had recently left The Velvet Underground, and modernist orchestral composer Terry Riley. They had both previously worked with avant-garde composer La Monte Young, who specialised in drone based music.
This album is mostly composed of improvised instrumental music with a surprisingly heavy and upbeat edge. The pair had a hard time finding creative compromises as the album began editing, though both had some pride in elements of it later on.
Four of the songs are instrumentals written by both artists. The Soul of Patrick Lee is written by Cale alone, and features lyrics sung by Adam Miller.
