The Academy of Visual Arts (AVA), Ljubljana offers advanced undergraduate and postgraduate (MA) programmes in contemporary visual arts. It is a school that encourages its students to develop into confident, creative, and independent professional artists. AVA programmes are approved by SQAA.
AVA’s mission is to establish a strong, successful and recognisable institutional identity with a discernible contribution to the communities that we serve. It is an identity based on promoting individual visions and creative excellence. The strategy of learning and teaching provides sound foundations for practical creative procedures and for the history and theory of visual arts that prepare students for their creative professional careers in the fields of fine art, theatre, film, video and photography, or for continuing their studies at postgraduate level. This strategy emphasises experimentation, research, problem solving and interdisciplinary collaboration based on global information and awareness.

AVA offers a unique programme of advanced study in visual arts with the following strengths:
- A high staff:student ratio of around 1 tutor per 10 students
- A personal workspace for each student

- The two advanced courses offered, of Fine Art and Conceptualisation of Space, promote an exciting culture of interdisciplinarity

erasmus+
Erasmus+ is the EU programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe for the period 2021-2027.
The Erasmus+ program is aimed at improving the skills and employability of young people and modernizing education, training and youth work. The seven-year program has a budget of 14.7 billion euros, with which the EU wants more than 5 million Europeans to study, train, gain work experience or perform voluntary work abroad.
AVA under the Erasmus + program enables students to complete part of their study obligations and/or practical training at a partner institution or a company abroad. In the Erasmus + program, the following countries participate:
- members of the European Union,
- Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Turkey and Macedonia.
The student can participate in the exchange for at least 3 months and not more than 12 months.
Frequently asked questions
Tuition fees and payments.
The annual fee for Specialised (Ba Hons) 3 – 4 yr. programs in Visual Arts: Fine Art or Conceptualisation of Space is 3.820 €. The first instalment of your tuition fees before you can enrol on the course. The tuition fee can be payable in tree equal instalments before the beginning of each term – trimester. Exceptionally, the number of instalments can be increased upon a submission of the formal request for consideration and approval by the school.
Are there any additional costs of study?
Enrolment fee is 70 €. Every year we have timetabled one week cultural excursions – field trips. Students should provide for those costs. The school continually strives for reduction in those costs with the help of sponsors and donors.
Studio-based work necessitates the purchase of various materials (canvases, paints, and a wide range of materials for interdisciplinary projects) that are not funded by the school. With resourcefulness and improvisation costs can be minimised.
Is it possible to study part-time?
Yes, we offer a well-prepared part-time study programme. We will try to ease the potential double workload for part-time students, but nonetheless, you must realise that the programme will be very challenging and demands rigorous personal discipline and commitment.
What if I cannot complete the study at AVA?
Study at AVA is comparable to study at any international specialist art institution that recognises the British FHEQ system and its system of authorised transcripts of students academic records.
Students who cannot complete their study in visual arts at AVA will receive a certificate according to the number of credit points achieved and completed years of study.
What kind of legal structure does your organisation have?
AVA – Academy of Visual Arts was established as a non-profit institute of education. As a non-profit institution it is obliged to convert any profit back to support the needs of the school, such as enhancement of our facilities and the creation of student bursaries.
Institute A.V.A. – The Academy for Visual Arts in Ljubljana strives to increase its pool of donors and sponsors in order to assist:
- the reduction of tuition fees
- the provision of bursaries for talented students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds
- the provision and maintenance of up-to-date equipment and facilities
- the provision of subsidies for the annual cultural field trip built into the programmes’ curriculum.
