    Astonishing scenery
I spent two nights on Mt Huangshan (staying at the decent Shilin Hotel) and would recommend. Would also recommend avoiding busy holiday seasons and weekdays, as even mid-week in October the top of the mountain was rammed with tour groups. I chose to walk up (the Eastern Steps) and down (Western) and did the West Sea Canyon on my day in between. It took me somewhat less time than advertised, with distances also shorter than advertised on the signs around the place, but all walks are strenuous as it's basically all stone steps. The scenery is spectacular though and it's worth the time and effort, and even the crowds! Lotus Peak was especially busy - if you want to do that, go early. I was up there by 9.30am and still queued for about 40 minutes to reach the summit from just underneath it, and going down the queues ran well down the mountain. Food on the mountain is passable but limited and pricey. There's no hot water for instant noodles (to deter people from bringing them) so self-heating meals are popular, although I believe these are also technically discouraged. I got to Huangshan by train from Hangzhou; caught the onward bus from Huangshan North train station to Tangkou; and then, after leaving my bag in the bus station (15 RMB per day) another bus up to the mountain. It was all fairly straightforward but there is limited English signage.

    Amazing scenery
I just spent 1.5 days in Huangshan City, so I seized this opportunity to pay a visit to Mt.Huangshan and an ancient water town - Hong Cun Village. To be honest, it is not enough to visit Mt. Huangshan but you can just enjoy the highlight of this magnificent place. We took Yungusi Cablecar up the mountain and Yuping Cablecar down, Locus Peak is the highest mountain, the steps are so steep that you should be caution when you climb up. The sceneries are so amazing , I lost my words for such a beautiful place. There are several hotels on the top of Mt. Huangshan, maybe is a good choice to stay for one night to enjoy the sunrise in the morning, but the price is not friendly. It takes approximately 40 - 60 minutes from Mt. Huangshan to Hong Cun village, just a typical water town in China, half day will be enough. One of the most famous dish in Anhui is called stinky fish, be careful to taste it, I don't like it at all.

    Luxurious boutique hotel Huangshan China
Upcloud Shuguangli Villa(雲亼·曙光里) is a hidden gem located near the Yungu cable car station up on Huangshan China. It's a small boutique hotel with rustic villas fully equipped with modern in room facilities like automated Japanese toilet seat and floor heating. It was was like staying in a serene and luxurious mountain village. The staff were very helpful and gave us good tips on what to do and where to hike. Highly recommended for a quiet retreat.

We visited Huangshan mountain during the Golden Week, when it get super crowded.
We started from the town of Hangkou.
If you happen to stay in the town of Tangkou, give local guide and driver Simon a call. We met him by coincidence. He used to be a guide and is now providing driver service, growing up in the area he took us to some very nice places nearby. And he speaks perfect English so a great help. He made some great recommendations about the best entrance to go up Huangshan in the busy days of the Golden Week. WeChat ID cjc5626316

We wanted to hike up the western steps but Simon advised us to take the lesser known North Entrance. This was indeed much more quiet, downside is that it was 1 hour drive from Tangkou, but certainly worth it. the walk up is beautiful, but be prepared: instead of hiking you find yourself walking stairs the whole way. From the north entrance it’s about 7-8 km to walk up, and the stairs get pretty steep and and some point we were quite done with it. But the views are good.

Once up on the mountain we stayed 2 nights at XiHai hotel, situated a bit towards the north. Still at the top it’s all steps up and down, don;t expect some good hiking trails to take you off the paved paths and stairs.
We tried to walk the West Sea Canyon route as we were told this is less crowded. But during Golden Week, everything simply gets crowded and the small steps and paths on this route were packed. Views again are great.

For sunrise and sunset, when it’s crowded, it actually pays to find a place that does not have a perfect view. We did a sunset at the start of West Sea Canyon, where you do not really see the sun set (it sets behind a mountain) but the colors are gorgeous and the setting is so serene compared to the hot spots where there are tons of people trying to take photo’s. We did the same for sunrise and had a nice experience this way, with more peace and quiet (if this is what you like of course. For the perfect picture you best go to a top)

We stayed 2 nights on the mountain, which was really more than enough time. We had some time to relax as well, but if you are pressed for time you can do 1 night.

The mountain is as they call it the sacred mountain of Huangshan city. The place is terrifically breathtaking and the nature is absolutely one of the best I have ever seen. Also, there are stairs in every stage of the mountain but it is really hard for youngers and elders. The whole trip should be taken in two days but I went there with a friend who encouraged me to do it in just one day. We got from the eastern side by the cable car and then moved to the top ascending. We started the trip at 7 am and ended at the end of the day in the evening on the western side of the mountain. The whole hiking experience was definitely worth, also try to get to know a local who can tell the legendary stories about the mountain. the transportation is reliable, there is a daily bus from the station in front of the train station. Bring with you plenty of water and supplies because it is kinda expensive at the mountain. Try to get a map and check the route and stairs and enjoy the hiking experience and nature.

Went on a 1 day guided tour. This was during second half of Golden Week when weather deteriorated. On the plus side, no crowds. But also no views. Generally speaking, I would try to avoid any holidays or weekends for walking to the summit as some stairs are narrow, only allow one way traffic and can get pretty crowded. Despite limited to no views, a must do when in China and in Anhui province, a sacred mountain with otherwise great views and also some interesting birds to see.

After ascending the cable car we started our hike. Beautiful views emerged from the clouds. After reaching the hotel and leaving the heavier things behind, we went on an afternoon hike. Deep valleys with flowing clouds, a beautiful canyon. These mountains have an amazing climate. Tour organized by Alisa from Chinahighlihgts. I highly recommend.

The granite peaks with peculiar shapes, the characteristic species of Pinus hwangshanensis pine and the phenomenon of the sea of fog are unique here. An unforgettable experience, especially watching the sunrise. I highly recommend one day to walk the trails.

Great place! Difficult to arrange logistics to get here, not so much English as everywhere in China, but otherwise totally memorable and something I will remember until my last days. Very steep, similar to kung-fu movies to get up by stairs and dangerous on the way back. Totally recommend to stay overnight on the top. Cable car is nice thing how to get down, but keep in mind that it does not go all the way. I felt like a pilgrim on the way down as well as up, be prepared for this!

Huangshan Mountain or Yellow Mountain is one of the most famous mountains in China, therefore one of the most popular tourist destinations as well. Domestic Tourists flock here by the thousands every day, particularly in peak seasons to see the amazing scenery of cliffs, rock formations and valleys. This is where you need some inside running on when to attend!

Visiting Hunagshan is somewhat an expensive exercise by normal Chinese standards. To reach the town of Tangko at the base of the mountain, tourists can catch bus, generally one from nearby Huangshan city, about 40 minutes away. This will pick you up from the hostel for about 18RMB. The buses will drop you at the car park, where you must then catch another bus up to the cable car station for 15RMB, or a taxi for around 40 – 50RMB. The entry fee to the park is will cost you 230 RMB, perhaps almost as steep as some of the thousands of steps you traverse if you don't wish to pay the extra 80RMB (each way) to then take the cable car to the top! So with a nights accomodation seeing Yellow Mountain could cost around 420 RMB per person, without considering the price of getting to Huangshan.

If you wish to avoid paying the cable car fee, there is the option to walk up to the mountain. The western side steps are in total a 15km trip, while the eastern steps is about half that distance. Be warned though it is a very STEEP climb in places and you should allow about 4 hrs for the shorter trip, or 8 hrs for the more arduous journey.

Timing - Avoid the peak season of Chinese NY, May Holidays and National Day Holidays. During this period the waiting time for the cable car can exceed 2 hrs, so if you're here during these times arriving early is recommended, with the first car leaving at 6.30am, with the last returning at 4.30pm. The trick in peak season (May to October) is to avoid Friday and Saturday, when coupled with tours there will be more domestic "short" tourists. Sunday is a good day as most are heading home to be at work the next day!

Whichever way you choose to go, once you reach the cable car station on Huangshan, there are a range of concrete paths that will take you to all of the scenic areas of the mountain. There is at least a full days walking and sightseeing to be had in reaching all the main spots, but there are a series of smaller loops so you can spend as much time as you want on top of the mountain. Many of the paths are shaded, however be prepared for a very tiring day if you want to see a number of the top spots. There are several large rest areas and outlooks where the paths intersect where you can buy food and drink, but expect to pay inflated prices.

The paths and steps are very steep in places so a certain level of fitness is required for those that want to make the most of their visit. The spectacular views however make it all worthwhile after sweating it out to climb to the top of the various outlooks.
It is nearly impossible to get lost on the mountain, as signs with english translations are at every major point and intersection, so it is easy to plan how far you wish to walk and which areas to visit.

Just after the cable car exit, there can be a number of monkeys that inhabit the area. They are very inquisitive, and you can get within a couple of metres to take photos without too many problems. Be aware though, they dont like feeling threatened, and baring their long teeth is enough to get you to back off quickly. Like a lot of wildlife that inhabit tourist spots, they are often looking for food, and will use any means to get it. On one trip, I saw one of the larger males simply "steal" a plastic bag full of goodies that one of a group of people had brought up with them.

Huangshan Mountain is a great spot, and should definitely be part of any visit to this area of China. Shanghai and Nanjing are around 5 hrs bus ride away, and Hangzhou about 2.5hrs. The relatively high price is well worth the expense and is still cheap by western standards, and offset by the savings made at other sites and the memories taken away from this spectacular site. Dragon Bus China is a new Independent Travel Network that operates Sectors and Passes that include Huangshan Village, Yellow Mountain and the amazing nearby 1000 Island Lakes and Hangzhou to name a few.
