Calculate your overnight shipping costs

FedEx overnight costs are determined by:

The delivery time the next day

Typically, when you choose a shipping service with a delivery commit time later in the day, the lower the shipping cost. For example, FedEx Standard Overnight costs less than FedEx Priority Overnight.

The delivery address of the shipment/distance to the destination

Usually, the farther your package is shipped, the more shipping will cost. Pricing is determined by different zones, which are laid out around your origin address like a rough bullseye. The more zones you cross, the more you'll pay for shipping. For example, if you ship to Zone 1, which is 1–150 miles away, your cost will typically be less than shipping to Zone 2, which is 150–300 miles from the origin address.

Packaging type and package size, weight and density

The weight of the packaging used to ship is added to the weight of your contents. Usually, the heavier your shipment is, the higher the cost will be.

For each shipment, your charge is based on the dimensional weight (dim weight) or actual weight of the package—whichever is greater. Dim weight reflects a package’s density, which is the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight. Calculate your dim weight

Dimensional weight is not used for FedEx Express envelopes, paks, and tubes or small, medium and large boxes. FedEx® Boxes and FedEx® Tubes have a minimum billable weight of 2 lbs. for FedEx® Boxes and 9 lbs. for FedEx® Tubes.

Answers to your FedEx overnight shipping questions

How does FedEx overnight shipping work?

Overnight shipping is a delivery service that guarantees shipments will be delivered the next day by a certain time. If your shipment is 150 lbs. or less, we offer three different delivery options for overnight delivery, depending on when you need your package to arrive. If your shipment is over 150 lbs., choose FedEx First Overnight Freight for next-day delivery.

To ensure a shipment will be delivered the next day, you must create a shipping label, pack the shipment and get it to FedEx by the latest drop off time. Cutoff times and hours vary by location. You must meet the cutoff time to get your shipment delivered the next day. See the hours of locations near you

Can I overnight a letter?

Yes, you can overnight a letter with FedEx overnight services. We offer three different delivery options: early morning, mid-morning and afternoon.

You can use a FedEx Express envelope or your own. To get started, you must create a shipping label online, print it and place it on your envelope. If you don’t want to print the label at home or if you don’t have an envelope handy for your letter, head to a FedEx location. Express envelopes are free when you ship using overnight services.

How much does it cost to overnight a letter?

The cost to overnight a letter depends on the overnight shipping service selected and the distance to the delivery address. The earlier in the day you need the letter to be delivered, the more shipping will cost. Get overnight rates.

What is the latest drop off time for FedEx overnight? What is the FedEx overnight cutoff time?

Cutoff times and the availability of Saturday drop off vary by location. You must drop off the package by the specific cutoff time for your package to be delivered the next day. There is no additional charge for dropping off a shipment at a retail location on Saturday. Hours vary by location.

If your local customers are ordering late in the evening, offer them next-day delivery for their orders with FedEx Extra Hours™. You can drop off packages late at qualified locations for next-day FedEx Express local delivery.

Contact your account representative to get started. Or please call customer support to learn more.

What is the fastest overnight shipping option?

The fastest overnight delivery option is FedEx First Overnight. You can expect your package or envelope to be delivered by 8 a.m. the next business day in most areas.

Can I overnight a package on the weekend?

If you use FedEx First Overnight or FedEx Priority Overnight, shipments can be picked up and delivered on Saturday in many areas for an additional charge.

If you use FedEx Standard Overnight, packages can be picked up, not delivered, on Saturday for an additional charge. Overnight shipments aren’t delivered on Sundays.

Is FedEx one-day shipping, overnight shipping and same-day shipping the same thing?

One-day shipping and overnight shipping are interchangeable terms. In general, they mean a package should be delivered the next business day, unless otherwise stated.

Same-day shipping means a package is delivered later on the same day that you hand the package over to our team members for shipping. We offer options for same-day delivery within many cities as well as cross country.

Is a signature required for overnight delivery?

It depends. Some shippers require a signature when creating a shipment. FedEx also typically collects a signature for commercial deliveries or where the declared value exceeds certain thresholds. Many shipments can be released without obtaining a signature.

1FedEx Standard Overnight delivery is available in all 50 states, but only to addresses where the FedEx Priority Overnight delivery commitment is by 10:30 a.m. or noon.
