Q&A
I think it's sweet that they ended the episode with the sentiment that Mitch and Cam's best memories were with Lily, but it kind of rings hollow because Lily has been out of focus quite often in the last few seasons, with only a few occasional Lily-centric plots (and even then they were mostly about Mitch and Cam.)
Speaking of out of focus, where the hell are Luke and Alex? Is nothing interesting going on with their lives? The show already took away their romantic partners, and Alex is busy with a job we barely know about. We also never found out what happened with Luke's app idea with his venture capitalist friend. It's as if the show forgot they existed.
The show forgot all about Haley just until this episode.
The actress as well as the character. The night the episode where Phil's father passed away she posted on Instagram that she found out about it watching the show on TV like the rest of us.
I think it’s so bizarre that they chose the B plot of that episode to have manny and joe and lily instead of the Dunphy kids. Luke, Haley and Alex weren’t even seen at the memorial. Wtf modern family? They absolutely would have been there.
I figure it's probably them trying to keep the budget low by not including everyone. I'm sure everyone has negotiated pretty high salaries by now. Whatever the reason, the least they could do is have a throwaway line "Oh it's too bad the kids couldn't make it they're at..."
Because they don't read the scripts on episodes they're not in
"Our best memories in life are the times we spent with Lily. Too bad we constantly ditch her and have zero concern for her well-being while we're getting into constant shenanigans due to our inability to be honest with each other."
"Should we adopt again?"
Right on the head, lol
Holy shit, you guys really only come on here to complain?
I know this is a dead thread, but I have been recently watching the series for the first time, and I check the associated thread after each episode, and you are totally right! It really pisses me off that people just came here to shit on the show endlessly, when I for one am really loving every episode.
I still look at these threads of episodes even though they r old
That's me exactly right now.

"I wanna stress that I'm adopted."
This show's greatest sin is not giving Lily more space. Downright criminal.
The running gag of Jay and Gloria forgetting who Dylan is funny
Meh, not really. I know it’s satire, but how can someone forget the father of their own greatgrandchildren, especially when he’s been around sometimes for the last ten years?
Great grand children. Haley is Jay’s grandchild not Poppy and George.
The vase break Cam did was just hilarious!
It took me back to season 2 with the earthquake episode and lying to Pepper about his brunch

Speaking of his sister, what happened to her again? I thought she was still living with Mitch and Cam, but I guess the writers just forgot about that.
I think she's in prison, in the first episode of season 10 Cam tells Mitch about it.

She should have ended up with Andy
The new child is reincarnated Jay
So do the actors. Sarah told me she wanted them to end up together. It's in my book. There's a chapter in it talking with her and her boyfriends.
watch them adopt a kid and then name it jay in honor of jay's passing
I seem to recall that Claire didn’t want to get a RV and travel around the country. It is literally what she said when Phil suggested it in a past episode. So vivid that I just think the writers wouldn’t go with that. But what do you know. Claire changed her mind.
That episode Claire said she didn’t want to do it because the kids wouldn’t stop fighting
No. There was another one in which she said that and the kids weren’t fighting. The episode in season 5 when Phil and Claire took Haley to dinner to see what she had planned for her life. Haley turns it back on them and Phil mentions the RV thing and Claire says she won’t do that.
my current favorite episode in season 11. I love how they added some clips from the past seasons. felt more and more real for me...
I really loved that! It not only brings back those old episodes, but they brought back the memories I had when I watched theses episodes a few years back. Hits me in the feels :’(
Definitely my favourite episode of S11 yet
Im not gonna lie, my son was 3 when this show premiered so seeing the flashbacks made me tear up, because not only does it make me miss those early memories of my son when he was that age but, like Mitch and Cam, you see your kids growing up, my son is 13 now and he’s gonna be a man soon. It’s bittersweet
I was 16. The same age as Haley.
Now she has kids and I still feel like a child.
Yea as a long time fan since the beginning, it’s sad to see it come to an end. I imagine the cast cried and hugged and felt even worse
I think this episode was beautiful. So many good funny memories from the older seasons. The scene where Phil is talking to young Hailey about boy troubles made me tear up. Jay's speech about how quickly kids grow up was beautiful.
Can somebody list all the episodes from the older episodes? I'm having a hard time finding it.
That was surprisingly a good episode. I loved how they inserted scenes from old episodes. And i really hope they keep this momentum for the final 3 episodes!
I been complaining about last couple of seasons but when I read final 3 episodes I feel sad
Agree. For me, the show loss the magic after season 5 but I still stayed loyal. Im gonna miss it when it’s gone
feel like they lost magic after season 8
There was a huge writer turnover at the end of season five due to contracts and a feeling that they were becoming redundant. That's why everyone always uses season 5 as a marker for the show's greatest years. The 3 main writers who left were Bill Wrubell, Dan O'Shannon and Ben Carlin. Most of the writers told me that Bill best captured Phil's voice and in many of the iconic episodes in the early years, Bill and Dan especially were involved. Dan by the way, is a sitcom legend having worked on Cheers, Frasier and coming up with that famous ending for Newhart.
Yeh ikr?! Really didn’t think this would be that good, but if they keep this momentum goin who knows
This would be the best way to end the show by showing all those wonderful moments from past seasons.
In the past, a clip show would be a source of complaint.
I’m torn over this episode. On one hand, I get the writers wanting to tap into their love of the show and give the fans this best-of episode. On the other hand, there are only four episodes left and they spend a third of the episode on flashbacks? Hmm. I have to say, they really picked some good flashbacks for this episode, bringing back so many fun memories of the show.
Emotional Jay is the best!
How could two babies tear up a butterfly with their small hands?
If Mitchell and Cam get a baby at the end it's like the show came full circle.
This felt like the clip show episode of the office where you knew something was ending so you saw the old moments as nice but realize that time has passed
I feel like you always get a clip show sometime in the last few episodes of a series so I think it was incorporated nicely
Judging by the comments though everyone loves the idea of doing a clip show at this point in the series. I thought it was kind of lame to waste that much screen time on flashbacks and expected everyone to be critical of it but practically everyone is praising it.
Maybe it’s just me but I find Gloria harder to understand now with her new American accent
Thank God for closed captioning or else I wouldn’t understand half of what she says.
Great episode, especially considering it was a little like a clip show. Loved it when Jay told Dylan he remembers when he was a kid, but they met in senior year. Couldn't stop laughing.
My obvious theories: Phil and Claire are going to use the RV and drive off into the sunset so to speak.
What was the kids show they were watching at the beginning??
I'd have to check again, but maybe it was one of those bad YouTube videos. The ones targeted to kids, but are really violent and inappropriate.
Happy Treehouse Friends, anyone?
now im getting sad that this show must end
The Impossible Potato.
Clip shows in final seasons are so frustrating. I wonder if this was part of the cost cutting when the show was renewed. Clearly, one way they cut costs was to limit the amount of episodes the children appear.
First time in a long time I actually enjoyed an episode.
Clip shows save money, not having characters saves money. Just sad in the final season they are cutting corners. This was a great show, one of my top 5 of all time, I will watch to the end, but it seems like they are all just going through the motions.
the old clips got me all teary eyed 😭😭

If it was season 2, I would agree. But I believe they earned the right to look back at what they accomplished with nostalgia and I loved it.
I agree with this
That episode was perfect 😭
Best episode since season 4
does anyone know when the next episode is coming? i cant find it anywhere
Wednesday
The flashbacks. 😭😭😭😭😭 yep, I am going to binge watch this again. I need to get the dvd box set.
so this was just a clipshow...
Not much actual tv
The kids are tearing the butterfly apart....Jesus christ!
I thought this was a terrible episode and probably one of their lowest for the season. It was not funny and completely unoriginal. But this always happens with me. I come here to see if other people agree with my opinion of the episode and the general consensus is always the opposite of what I felt.
Maybe Modern Family is just not your kind of sitcom(?) Just a thought.
