Yorkshire is set to be one of the hottest places in England next week, with temperatures forecast to reach a sizzling 23C across the county.

It comes as a plume of warm weather from the Sahara is set to hit the UK, with experts predicting that a new hottest day of the year will be recorded before the end of May.

According to weather maps and charts from WX Charts , temperatures will reach 23C in parts of the country on Thursday, May 23, including the Midlands, North East and Yorkshire. Meanwhile in London, temperatures will reach highs of around 22C.

But before the temperatures heat up again, Yorkshire, like much of the UK, is set to experience a period of wet weather, with thundery showers forecast as we head towards the weekend .

James Madden, from Exacta Weather, told Birmingham Live : "Once again, the outlook is nowhere near as dire or severe as third-party forecasts were repeatedly indicating for this week over the past several days, and despite some rain in the forecast and the developing risk of thundery showers at times, it will now be much more settled in between any unsettled weather and actually feel quite warm and summery in any developing sunshine.

"Our forecasts also concisely covered this kind of scenario for the upcoming week, despite much different forecast projections from elsewhere.”

Looking further ahead, there’s a chance that we could see temperatures go above 30C for the first time in 2024. Mr Madden continued: “Additionally, our longer-term projections are also showing some pretty decent and warm weather persisting as the more dominant feature from in and around next weekend and into the final third of May for many parts of the country.

“There is a higher than normal risk that this will transition into periods of warm to very hot weather within this developing period that could easily see temperatures reaching or surpassing the 30C mark for the first time this year."

But it will be some time before temperatures hit 30C. After last weekend's scorching sunshine, the Met Office is forecasting rain for much of Yorkshire this week. Their weather forecast for the county on Tuesday, May 14 is: “Coastal areas may start dry, however cloud and outbreaks of rain affecting the west edging slowly east, reaching all areas by midday.

"Some heavier bursts at times, particularly over the Pennines, but the rain becoming lighter and more intermittent later. Maximum temperature 16 °C."

Into Wednesday, cloudy conditions are likely to take over, with the chance of showery outbreaks at times. The Met Office forecast for Yorkshire on Wednesday, May 15 says: “Areas of low cloud and mist or fog will continue to affect some coasts. Elsewhere, generally rather cloudy conditions are likely to prevail with occasional showery rain at times. Maximum temperature 18 °C.”

The outlook for Thursday, May 16 to Saturday, May 18, adds: “Areas of low cloud, mist and fog affecting coastal areas at times. Otherwise, often rather cloudy with some showery rain, perhaps heavy Thursday and Friday. Some brighter spells later.”
