My first Licinius II

When Galerius died in 311AD there were four men calling themselves Emperors - Licinius I in Asia, Maximinus Daia in Egypt, Maxentius at Rome, and Constantine in Gaul. Valerius Licinianus Licinius served as Caesar (he was raised at the age of 20 months ) in the eastern empire from 317 to 324 A.D while his father was Augustus Licinius I. The mother of Licinius II was Flavia Julia Constantia, the sister of the Emperor Constantine the Great. His father constantly fought against his co emperor Constantine the Great and was finally defeated by Constantine at Chrysopolis on 18 September 324. Licinius I abdicated but was eventually put to death by hanging in 325. It is believed that his father had attempted yet another rebellion against Constantine the Great as an ally of the Goths. Licinius II was executed AD 327 at Pola. He was 11 years old...

Some of Licinius II's portraits look older than 11 and they are not necessarily from his last year.

 

Licinius II is not the favorite ruler of anyone I know. That is not all bad. His coins are therefore less expensive than they might be. One could try for a type set. Get RIC VII and list his types (or Failmezger's good book) and then pick them off. Here is one of the scarcer types, only from Thessaloncia.

It would be possible and interesting to collect the vota types of the mint of Thessaloncia in this period. It is the only mint making a series of vota types, much like this one, for all the rulers at the time.

Great coin! They really seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel with those metal band names though.

Superb coin @Severus Alexander . Never seen a Licinius II with so many details. About the eagle, do you really think it’s an ankh symbol or is it simply holding a wreath ?

 

"Ankh-eagle" was just a joke, because it looks so silly. It's definitely a wreath.

 

I was the underbidder of this one in the Naumann auction last weekend. I knew it was missing from your set, and the thought occurred that if I won it, it would have made for a nice early Christmas present to you. Unfortunately, someone else had other ideas...
