Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo has said it is "going to take a few weeks" before he is back to full fitness, having returned to training earlier this week after almost three months out injured.

The 24-year-old had surgery on his ankle in December after sustaining an injury in Brentford's Premier League game at Brighton.

In an interview with club media,, external Mbeumo said: "I need to get my fitness back and get my sensations back on the pitch as well. It's going to take a few weeks, but I'm just happy to be around the boys on the pitch."

The injury meant Mbeumo was unable to represent Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

He continued: "I'm not used to being injured a lot and having a big one there was sad for me, but as a footballer you need to face those things and keep moving forward.

"It's hard - even as a positive person, I had some moments when I was a bit down, but I just realised that I'm still lucky to be around the boys, to have fun and enjoy some moments, even if it's not on the pitch.

"The injury was good for me to be more focused on myself, and just remember that when I'm fully fit it's a big luck to have."
