Editorial Reviews

UK collection. Sammi Smith sang soulful, melancholy country music. Her low, distinctively husky voice was built for sad songs, and she has been described as country music's Dusty Springfield. Compiled and annotated by Bob Stanley, "Looks Like Stormy Weather" is a collection built for winter nights. There was a compelling warmth to her voice that should have taken her out of country and into the Hot 100 - or even the UK charts - more than once, but her only real crossover moment came in 1971 when she scored the original hit version of 'Help Me Make It Through The Night'. DJ Ralph Emery recalled being in a motel room with Sammi one night in 1970 where she had sat and played him a whole bunch of Kris Kristofferson songs. At that point, neither the DJ nor Sammi had a clue what was around the corner for her or for her friend Kristofferson, who was then just the janitor at Columbia Records. 'Help Me Make It Through The Night' topped Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart for three weeks in 1971, peaked at #3 on Billboard's Hot 100, won "Single of the Year" and the "Best Country Song" at the CMA awards, and a Grammy for "Best Country Vocal Performance by a Female". Sammi's voice would have been new to most listeners - it's melancholic ache and sensuous depth suited the song's needs perfectly. Now signed to the tiny Mega label, she would record seven albums for them between 1970 and 1975, and the pick of them are the heart of this compilation.

Nice collection of the Mega years 1970-1975 and extra track from 1969 Columbia records, and even better Surprise from 2 tracks from 1980 Sound factory records, Quality is good for this collection might be a bit "pricey" but having the extra tracks that were previously unreleased makes this collection worth it, Still would like to see a collection of her years 1976-1979 for Elektra she had several hits on that label.

Sammi Smith’s "Looks Like Stormy Weather" is a 2022 Ace Records collection comprising 24 tracks, the majority of which are from her successful period on Mega Records where she cut seven albums over the period 1970 to 1975. These include her well known hits 'Help Me Make It Through The Night', ‘Today I Started Loving You Again’ and ‘Long Black Veil’ as well as ‘The Toast Of '45’, ‘Then You Walk In’ and ‘I've Got To Have You’. The present CD also contains three non-Mega sides, ‘Brownville Lumberyard’ a lackluster side from her stint on Columbia and two previously unreleased Guy Clark numbers - ‘Desperados Waiting For A Train’ and ‘Texas 1947’ – recorded in 1980 when Ms. Smith was on Sound Factory records. The latter two are a let down. Stylistically, they do not work with Ms. Smith’s approach - termed by CD collator Bob Stanley as 'melancholic' - which may explain why they remained in the vaults for 42 years. Their inclusion is also at odds with the title "1969-1975" which should be "1969-1980" indicating that they were an afterthought after the cover was designed and executed. The 1980 sides pale in comparison to the Clark originals with arrangements that are more funk - extended wah wah guitar breaks rather than country. It’s a shame that her latter-day non-Mega hits, ‘Lovin’ Arms’, ‘What A Lie’ and ‘Cheatin’s A Two Way Street” were not included instead. Many of these tracks have been previously available on the 1996 Varese Sarabande “Best of” collection that is still available at half the price of this set. Surprisingly, given the technological advances in digital mastering that have occurred in the 26 years between the two CDs, the sonics on the Ace CD remaster by Nick Robbins are not greatly improved – if at all - from the Inglot/Hersch mastering on the Varese Sarabande CD. Finally, the sequencing of the tracks on the 2022 CD is somewhat idiosyncratic rather than chronological - irritating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Je suis assez satisfait de : Looks Like Stormy Weather 1969-1975 par Sammi Smith.

Me Make It Through The Night’’.
