Summary

  • CBS has confirmed The Equalizer season 5 ahead of the season 4 finale.
  • Queen Latifah's charisma carries the series through engaging plot twists.
  • The cast for season 5 of The Equalizer is expected to be mostly unchanged from previous seasons.

CBS' modern retelling of the classic '80s series The Equalizer is one of the network's most explosive shows, and now it has been renewed for season 5. Debuting in 2021, the Queen Latifah-led spinoff is based on the aforementioned '80s series but is also an adaptation of the Denzel Washington films of the same name. In the show, Latifah plays the mysterious Robyn McCall, an ex-CIA agent who uses her skills as a vigilante by dishing out street justice for those who have been wronged while also trying to find her own redemption.

Carried largely by Queen Latifah's overwhelming charisma, the series is a perfect continuation of the franchise as it introduces new wrinkles while staying true to the simple premise, making it so interesting to watch. CBS has allowed Robyn's story to play out across four seasons thus far, and each new outing has raised the stakes and made Latifah's character all the more compelling. Unlike the procedurals that dominate the network's slate, shows like The Equalizer build toward something, making its renewal for season 5 an absolute necessity.

CBS Renews Season 5

Though the show was one of the last to get the call, the latest news confirms that The Equalizer season 5 has been renewed by CBS. The network's decision comes only a few weeks after it renewed most of its slate and canceled a few others like So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas. The decision seems to be driven by the show's impressive ratings numbers, and with season 5 guaranteed, the show might even see another bump in viewership as it continues to be a CBS flagship. Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, praised the series, saying:

The Equalizer, led by the incomparable Queen Latifah, has all the best elements of a powerful drama. The series is stacked with suspense, heroism, high stakes and formidable characters our audience roots for. We look forward to another dynamic season.

CBS Has Renewed The Equalizer

CBS renewed The Equalizer for its fifth season before the fourth had even finished airing.

Though the decision seems like a no-brainer, it took a little while for CBS to finally decide to renew The Equalizer for its fifth season. The decision came in late April 2024, not long after shows like CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd were axed despite their strong viewership. Having already punched the tickets of several other action-oriented procedurals, CBS renewed The Equalizer for its fifth season before the fourth had even finished airing.

The Equalizer season 4 currently airs Sundays at 8 pm ET on CBS.

The Equalizer Season 5 Cast

Robyn Will Be Back In Season 5

The cast of The Equalizer isn't set in stone, and except for Latifah's Robyn McCall, no character is truly safe and could be killed off. With that in mind, it is difficult to predict who will be around to reprise their roles in season 5, since season 4 hasn't concluded yet. However, since no changes in the cast are known, it's safe to say that the bulk of the main ensemble will be back for the fifth season.

The entire expected returning cast includes:

The Equalizer Season 5 Story

What Will Happen When The Equalizer Returns?

The Equalizer's Robyn and Mel, with Mel looking at Robyn who seems contemplative.

Because season 4 isn't completed yet, it's impossible to say exactly what will happen in the story of The Equalizer season 5. The shocking cliffhanger of season 3 was resolved in the first episode of season 4, and Robyn will likely get back to her usual adventures. She's taken steps toward understanding her past, and season 5 will likely continue those small clues that might help "The Equalizer" find a bit of retribution for herself as well as those she helps through vigilante justice. Season 5 will also likely have more of Robyn's signature brand of exciting street justice.
