Old town represent mix of the culture, architecture and tradition t. In more then 2500 years we had Illyrian tribes, Romans, Ottomans and many other empires.
Inside the walls of the Old Town you will not find shops, bars or active life but you can enjoy numerous monuments remained up to today.

It’s one of the very small old towns in Montenegro, and definitely worth a visit. There is a lovely walk up to the entrance, with some nice cafes and restaurants and friendly shop owners along the way. We enjoyed looking around, but the views of the mountains from the fortress walls at the rear were the best. We walked all the way up from Bar (you can get taxis) and it was a great day out.

Old Bar is located inland, a few miles from the new city of Bar, resting on Londša hill, at the foot of Mount Rumija.
A small museum just inside the entrance explains the site and its history. From here, follow the green arrows around the major points of interest.
The northern corner has an 11th-century fortress with much-photographed views showcasing Stari Bar’s isolated setting amid mountains and olive groves.

Beautiful place, but beware of street parking scam by local boys on the way to the entrance. These young boys will try to extort 2.50 € to park on the public street. Not sure if it’s per hour or what. When we refused & left, they tried to block our car & threw something at our car. We come to Stari Bar all the time - during high/low seasons and we have NEVER been charged for parking on a PUBLIC street. We have never seen these kids before & there are no signs that say you have to pay. We won’t be coming anymore.

We visited this fortress on our way from Kotor to Podgorica and are really glad we did. Beautiful ruins that invite you to explore and get lost in a long past time. We visited off season which meant we came across only a few other visitors. A very peaceful and beautiful place!
The only thing overshadowing our visit has been a parking scam we fell for. Upon arrival we were asked to pay a 2€ parking fee by a local. Since this had been quite something common during our stay in Montenegro, we obviously paid without a thought. We also were not surprised that the local had no change for our 20€ bill and went towards the old town and its stores to get change. Unfortunately, he disappeared. A few minutes later we were addressed by one of his country men who had watched us from afar, telling us there was no parking fee for this particular lot. Long story short, we pretended to leave, got change, came back and ran into our local ‘friend’. We got our 20€ bill back and paid our “parking fee”. While our visit to Stari Bar was very pleasant, this experience was certainly not!

Well worth a trip. Very nice walk around the ruined town and magnificent views.
We also got scammed by the local parking touts ! You park on the street just down from Stari Grad and they charge you 2 euros for the privilege. We figured it was better to pay than come back to a problem with our spangly hire car ! But its intimidating and I don't like it.
Do wear trainers, cobles, on a dry day were slippery - I'm very steady on my feet and slipped on the way back down - don't be put off going, but just ensure sensible shoes.
Try to see the beautiful mosque on the way back down the road.

Good view over the city and the bay. You should hire guide ( not available on the site) if you want to learn something about this fortress or do your homework. Signboards are not explicit, you can't often get what and where you can see. And for just €2 you can rent a ..... plan of the fortress!!!

Stari Bar - [Old Town], is located on a hillside some 4 km. to the south-east of Bar. It comprises a modern small town, and the Old Town which is dominated by a fortress mostly in ruin. The Old Town is where tourists are directed to.
Access to the fortress ( for tourists ), is via a steep narrow pedestrian road (?), with polished cobbles underfoot, which makes walking difficult. The route is contained between shops ( mostly selling Olive Oil ), numerous bars and cafes all of which offer to press oranges or pomegranates. At the top of this road is the Fortress, which has a Clock Tower ( said to date from the 1750's ), a Museum, an aquaduct which has been partly reconstructed following the 1979 earthquake, but probably best of all are the magnificent views.
If you decide to go, check if there is a Cruise ship in Bar, and if so go early to miss the crowds.

We arrived late into Bar and after reading a quick note about Stari we taxied up for just before sunset. It is not a "Disneyland" attraction, you are getting the real deal. Be ready to walk, climb and explore. It is worth every second. As we meandered through, suddenly we heard a beautiful call to prayer come across the mountains and it was as if we were exported back in time. Not much explanation or signage, but worth every second!
*not recommended for people who aren't sure on their feet. (Toddlers, elderly or those with physical limitations.)

Opportunity to walk all around a town of ruined houses and churches. There were no restrictions so careful footwork is needed. Renovations in progress . Open till 8 pm but we ran out of daylight . Plenty to see . Low entry fee .

Has anyone visited in April and know what time it closes in April?
Summer closes at 8pm. Winter closes at 5pm. What about April? Thanks
Hi, we are group of 7 friends. We are reaching in Dubrovnik on 22nd October,2016 for 3 nights . We are trtavelling togather for Montenegro for 2 nights and return to Dubrovnik to fly out next morning on 28th October. Can you guide us for entire trip with a maxi/taxi from airort pick up to drope, basically for entire trip.
We were thinking of 3 days of site seeing in dubrovnik. Mainly old town on 23rd, A cruse trip for on 24th and next day on 25th travel to Montenegro via sveti stefan to budva, evening at old town. On 26th go to Podgorica and Skadar lake in morning. Beach side in the evening. Next day 27th on the way to dubrovnik via Tara river canyan/ Durmitor/Zabljak town.
kindly suggest us the best possible and practical route and places .

Hi,
We visited Montenegro in September this year in our motorhome, inland it is a beautiful country but the coast is spoilt by un-coordinated planning and over-development and we only got as far south as Petrovac.
We are considering using Montenegro Lines ferry to travel with a motorhome from Bari to Bar in May 2015 and then drive into Albania. Having read the reviews, is the ferry still in a run-down state, dirty beds, broken toilets, smelling of diesel fumes, and without proper safety standards, because Montenegro is not governed by E.U. Standards?

Hi there
I know I'm late, but I didn't see your question up to this moment. Come to Bar and forget the overpriced and overtouristy other places. Here is a quiet town, with a nice, long promenade, lined by palm trees. Food is very good, prices are stil low.
I cannot write anything about the ferry's, as we came by car from Zabljak, Durmitor N.P.
