Families & Guests

*Details on this page are to keep in mind for Morningside campus ceremonies. All school ceremonies scheduled for the South Lawn of Morningside Campus will relocate. Based on feedback from our students, we have decided to focus attention on our Class Days and school-level graduation ceremonies, where students are honored individually alongside their peers, and to forego the university-wide ceremony that is scheduled for May 15. Details about degree conferral are forthcoming.

Ceremonies & Events

There are many events throughout Commencement season, and each school honors its graduates through its own school or graduation ceremonies and events where each graduate has the opportunity to be announced and walk across the stage.

University Commencement's annual, University-wide celebration consists of two ceremonies, one in the morning and another in the evening, this upcoming May.

The President of the University gives remarks and symbolically confers degrees on the graduates at both University Commencement ceremonies. This is a long-standing tradition and a memorable and celebratory event.

Ticket Information

Tickets are required for most ceremonies, including both University Commencement ceremonies. All graduating students who wish to participate in their respective University Commencement ceremony are required to register and to obtain guest tickets, if desired. Only graduating students are able to request tickets and they will receive regular emails from their individual school with information on how to do this.

Disability Services does not require special tickets to receive support. Columbia University is committed to making the events and activities of Commencement season accessible to all graduates and guests. Learn more about available accommodations and support.

Plan Your Visit

* It's important to remember what to bring, but also think about what not to bring. Balloons, sky lanterns, and other celebratory embellishments such as large placards, signs, or flags are not permitted at Commencement events. We hope to work together as a community to reduce waste, avoid potential tree entanglements, and provide an unobstructed and positive experience for all our graduates and guests. Prohibited items include: outside food or drinks; glass bottles; pets or animals (certified service animals are allowed); clothing deemed obscene or offensive; weapons of any kind, firearms, and knives; laser pointers; pepper spray/mace; lighters or matches; balloons, signs, posters, banners, flyers, or any items that could obstruct the view of guests and graduates; flags or flag posts; amplified sound items and noisemaking devices including cowbells and airhorns; and any item that may interfere with and/or distract graduation speakers, graduates, or guests.
