      Critics Consensus

Ably dramatizing a deadly serious chapter of World War II history while also remembering to have fun, Transatlantic is a visually sumptuous throwback to classic Hollywood melodramas.

Dan Einav Financial Times With its luscious aesthetic, slick pacing and throwback charm, Transatlantic largely delivers as entertainment. But given the subject matter, it should be so much more than that. Rated: 3/5 Apr 14, 2023 Full Review Meredith Hobbs Coons AV Club They’ve managed to do something fresh with it—and even tossed in a little artsy levity and smoochin’, no less. Rated: B+ Apr 10, 2023 Full Review Liz Shannon Miller Consequence While the show isn’t afraid to get as dark as its circumstances require, it’s also not afraid to embrace the occasional moment of levity, from funny misunderstandings to romantic drama to even an unexpected musical number. Apr 7, 2023 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Created by Anna Winger ('Unorthodox') and Daniel Handler. this compelling historical saga is stylish and bittersweet - with a somewhat whimsical view of a little-known segment of history - yet far too superficial with speech-heavy dialogue. Rated: 7/10 Aug 22, 2023 Full Review Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site The creators have chosen to set a story of determined opposition to cruelty and authoritarianism at one of the most tragic moments in history. The series brings out some of the worst in humanity and some of its best. David H Trite, unimagative and occasionally poorly acted Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Steve M Great cast and script... keeping history alive while greatly entertaining. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review David F I enjoyed it at first… but after a couple episodes I started to get bothered by the goofy jokes and lighthearted attitude about the most harrowing historical period of this century. In all, the show wasn't bad, but certainly felt more like a "cute" portrayal than an honest one. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/15/24 Full Review Jayski A FYI, some spoiler alerts here: Really enjoyed it and was looking stuff up as we watched it. I think it is important to watch 30 minute "The Making of Transatlantic" after the series as it explains why they took some liberties with some characters and plot lines. This was loosely based off the book, some characters fictional (Patterson) or combined (Paul & his brother), etc. We had just been to Marseilles in August 2023, which drew us to the show as well as a few actors we know and like such as Gillian Jacobs and Corey Stoll. It also introduced us to actors we hadn't seen such as Lucas Englander and Cory Michael Smith, who were great in this show as well as many others. While some of the stuff seemed unrealistic, after looking the story up, some of it was quite true and really happened. I learned a lot about this mission and what was going on in the south of France at the time. The romances were mostly added to draw you into the characters a bit more. Fry was actually a closeted homosexual but married two times and had four children. Amazing why he did to save so many people in his short time in France. Anyhow, we really liked the show and learned something about WWII we didn't know and about some great people. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review Gail W Disappointing "American" version of a harrowing time for Jews trapped in Europe. Our government handled the situation disgracefully, and this series exaggerates and tries to find comedy in horror. I knew about Varian Fry and Hiram Bingham, two brave Americans who saved hundreds of Jewish refugees despite the pressure from our government to stop. And yet, the creators of this series cheapened the story by throwing in gratuitous gay sex and casting minority actors to stay on good terms with the woke Hollywood elite. There is a very compelling story here that should have been filmed in serious and sober tones. There was nothing silly about the desperation that these Jewish refugees felt. Every day they remained in Europe could have been their last. We lost 6 million, and our government was too complacent to help. These people were expendable, except for a few well knowns. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/19/23 Full Review Elene J I loved the acting, the sets, photography, story, the intelligent dialogue and artist representation I hope we get many more seasons Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
