Hans von Winterfeldt was born on March 29, 1862, and died in 1931. He was the son of Rudolf von Winterfeldt and Pauline von Roeder.
He served in the Imperial German Army, attending the Kriegschule from 1891 to 1894, and rising to the rank of Lieutenant General. He served as the Commander of the Braunschweig Infantry Regiment No. 92, from 1912 to 1914, assuming command of the 37th Reserve Infantry Brigade and participating in the invasion of Belgium, the Battle of the Marne and the transition to trench warfare. He served as Chief Quartermaster of the 7th Army from 1914 to 1915, before being assigned to the Southern Army on the Eastern Front. As commander of the 8th Infantry Brigade, he participated in the offensive that drove the Russian troops out of Austria-Hungary, and, after a brief period of service on the Western Front in the winter of 1915 to 1916, he returned to the Eastern Front in 1916, as the Chief Quartermaster of the 8th Army and served as Chief of Staff to the Governor General of Brussels from 1916 to 1918.
