Maiko Kimono Matcha Tea Ceremony.. A must do in Kyoto and well worth the value. A once in a lifetime experience. As our host said..One Meeting..One Chance. And the photos? My wife has already decided to frame this one when we get home.

This was such a special experience. I had booked months in advance and it was a highlight of my trip. I knew it is possible to rent kimono to walk around the streets but I did not want to do that, but to experience wearing one in a more traditional and culturally appropriate setting. I attended alone as my other family members were doing other activities and I was made to feel very welcome. After I was checked in, I was shown to the changing area where I chose my kimono - I wanted green shades as I’m Irish. And then had my hair done in a simple but lovely style with flowers. Everything was done very efficiently and so well organised. I was given a numbered bag to put my everyday clothes into and it was safely stored away and a little Japanese kimono bag to hold my mobile phone and glasses. I was given a simple long undergarment to wear under the kimono. Those ladies are incredible how they can tie you into it so quickly and make it so elegantly. One size fits all, I’m rather top heavy and was worried I’d look inappropriate wearing it, especially as I’m not Japanese. I felt fabulous in it, so elegant, not a word usually associated with me! It really gave me an appreciation of the extraordinary and beautiful garment that a kimono is.
The tea ceremony was beautiful, our host explained the significance and etiquette behind each part of the process. Lots of time to take photos and as I was alone the staff ensured to take pictures for me. So special. I cannot recommend highly enough, thank you Maikoya for a wonderful experience.

We had a fun afternoon getting to wear a kimono and discovering the tea ceremony. The hostess was very gracious and welcoming. The ladies helping us getting dressed were also very friendly. We were able to also keep the kimonos for another stroll in the neighborhood, which was really fun.
Only downside was the number of people. Our Tea ceremony was with 15 people in total, which was not what was announced.
I still highly recommend the experience

We truly enjoyed every minute since we arrived. Getting ready for the tea ceremony was just as fun as learning about it and experiencing it. The ceremony isn’t long but it was very interesting. Definitely the best activity we could have chosen to do after arriving at magical Kyoto. A must while you’re there!!

A rushed, touristy affair that feels like being passed through a conveyor belt. Might be ok if you are completely new to the culture, or want photos in a kimono, but that's about it.

We did the full gig of dressing up in kimonos and going through tea making and serving process. For a large group of 12, we enjoyed it and the staff was awesome. Definitely recommend it

They called it a “once in a lifetime opportunity” and it really is. The ladies were so attentive and friendly, you have a nice selection of kimonos to choose from and they do your hair beautifully in two minutes flat! A real insight into Japanese culture - highly recommend 😊

My wife insisted on doing this Tea Ceremony thing with a real Maiko ( that’s a lady on her way to become Geiko -Geisha-).
And you know what? I’m glad she pushed me. It was an awesome 2 hrs experience. We were extremely lucky because we were the only couple participating but above all our luck was to meet such an incredible lady-Maiko- that literarily transported us into the the deep Japanese Samurai world!!
Her name is Fumiyuki.
The cherry on the cake were the two ladies that helped us with translation a and assisted us all the time. At the end “they” insisted to have a 15 minute walking tour and it was also amazing.
Waohh!
Do not miss this team!

I recently visited with my 13yr son and twin 10yr old girls. We did combined ticket with ninja/samurai museum as I didn't think they would enjoy the tea ceremony as much. In the end it has been a highlight of our 3 week holiday in Japan. There were plenty of kimono to choose from, and the ceremony was explained very well by our host in a relaxed manner. I got a bit lost trying to find the location, so give yourself time to arrive for booking in case.
