About
Nestled within the Warwickshire / Oxfordshire border, Upton houses a treasured art gallery showcasing the fine collections of Old Master and British pictures including Bosch, El Greco and Canaletto. Lord Bearsted purposefully redesigned and extended the original honey coloured house to best display his cherished art and rare French and English Chelsea porcelain. Please be aware that Upton houses an important collection of art and porcelain, and it isn't possible to have all items or rooms on permanent display. If you're visiting to see a particular collection item or room, we recommend contacting us before you visit. Last entry to the house is 3pm. Please check the website for full details as Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between January 2 and February 9 visits to the house must be pre-booked. Between November and March the gardens are open via the Winter Walk, which follows the hard paths around the perimeter of the garden, alongside the Mirror Pool and the Woodland Walk.

- Ascensionislander6 contributionsBeautifulLovely grounds and friendly café with plenty of outdoor space. Lovely food. They are short of volunteers in the main house so much of it was closed which they didn't make clear at the gate. Concentrating on the art work which is splendid. The guides are very helpful and knowledgeable. They are working very hardVisited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 May 2023
- Callum ACambridge, United Kingdom31 contributionsA Classic National Trust TreasureWe visited Upton Park on our way to the Cotswolds. This was a really interesting property, with great history and a fantastic art collection. However, there was plenty to see within the house and gardens if you're not particularly interested in art. The property was well managed and well laid out, meaning you could complete a full circuit of the estate, without feeling that you'd missed something. The cafe was of the usual high standard and we enjoyed a very nice lunch. The gardens are really beautiful, with a mixture of open lawns, woodland walks and a stunning bog garden. There is a 30m drop between the house and bottom of the garden, so accessibility will be a challenge for some. There was a good mixture of visitors of all age ranges, including families.Visited May 2023Written 8 June 2023
- brieryfieldPreston, United Kingdom683 contributionsA great vistWell worth a visit National Trust property members in the area decided to visit the property after reading the negative reviews and so glad we did. The grounds are beautiful in a natural setting which suited our taste. Lots of trees, bushes and vegetation alongside a pathway which led you around the gardens and the small lake a nice walk. The house was full of artwork by many artist on display which was enhanced by a volunteer playing the piano a lovely touch. The rooms had limited amount of furniture but some nice porcelain on display. The volunteers appeared very knowledgeable and readily shared it with the visitors. There is a shop, plant stall and cafe, I personally think the NT cafes are rather expensive but the coffee and scones were nice. I throughly enjoyed the visit today and thank you volunteers for giving your time.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 July 2023
- RazzyBthefirstMacclesfield, United Kingdom1,409 contributionsImpressive building and gardensAlthough I don't really have an interest in homes and gardens, as a National Trust member I feel it's important to maintain incredible places like this. We toured the house with someone always available to help answer any questions. You do really get a feel for what it was like here in the twenties. There's an empty swimming pool at the bottom of the garden with a fantastic view into the distance and you can imagine the happy times the Bearsted's would have had. Bumped into a party from the Hook Norton brewery tour the day before, also recommended.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 July 2023
- Nick HSt Leonards-on-Sea, United Kingdom523 contributionsOutstanding art collection and the most beautiful walks in the vast gardens.A large house, gallery and I suppose a museum in reality, set in fabulous and beautifully kept gardens. The art collection is vast as is the collection of porcelain. The guides were extremely helpful and knowledgeable, as were the hardworking gardeners toiling away in the full Sun! The café was well stocked, and we had very good coffee and scones there. We will certainly return one day, as there is just so much to see, and beautiful grounds to walk in.Visited September 2023Written 9 September 2023
- Peter RDartford, United Kingdom1,245 contributionsWorth the visitLovely house with an extensive art collection and some beautiful porcelain pieces on display. The room guides were very helpful and knowledgeable. The gardens were looking a little tired and some of the areas were out of bounds. There is an empty swimming pool in the garden which does detract from its surroundings and the lake at the bottom of the steep walk down from the house is also in need of some TLC.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 September 2023
- Ian G31 contributionsFabulous art collectionWhile visiting family we had a few hours to while away so looked through the National Trust app for something local to Banbury and came across Upton House and gardens and we are so pleased we did. The gardens were still looking very colourful and we enjoyed a walk down the ha ha which is more like a small cliff face. The view over he remaining gardens is wonderful and we will return to explore. On entry to Upton one collects an entry time ticket for the house so at our allotted time we went inside. The house has one of the finest art collections we have encountered outside the major city galleries. The collection amassed by Lord and Lady Bearsted is packed with old masters such as Canaletto, Bosch, Gainsborough and many more. For those interested in porcelain there is also a display of French and English pieces. Time was not on our side so we will have to make date to return to Upton to further explore the gardens and artwork. What a fabulous place and as we find with many NT places, the volunteers we knowledgeable, friendly and charming.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 October 2023
- Christine AOxfordshire, United Kingdom62 contributionsLovely Christmas feel!Thank you to the volunteers/ staff who decorated the trees in each room on the themes of Aesop´s fables! I also loved the leopard and the chickens! A lot of work there. The candlesticks that inspired the theme are absolutely amazing! The guide in the room was very knowledgeable about them but I would have liked to have a detailed display of how they were made especially as I believe that there is a full record of the crafting of another porcelaine piece available, so maybe could have extended into that. The dining room was open and we also enjoyed the information from another very knowledgeable guide about the 3 Stubbs there. The library gave us a lovely view on to the room below with glistening trees where you could sit down by the fire. Had a nice walk around the grounds, through the wood, down to the pond and back up to the house. Steep but manageable. I would have enjoyed seeing the Art but the Gallery was closed, I believe, for conservation which is a shame as in winter we have more time for these indoor activities, but I suppose it is hard to choose a suitable time for all! I enjoyed the focus given by the fables! It is easy to become overwhelmed by many interesting features of NT properties, but this way, one can appreciate and learn more! It would be great to have similar themes or trails highlighting certains specific treasures of NT properties throughout the year as an aid to the visits. A lovely visit!Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 December 2023
- janetwhitbyhomeBrackley, United Kingdom3 contributionsGet the Christmasy feelBeautifully decorated Christmas trees and the artwork and animals on the Aesops fables were amazing. I loved the pianist playing Christmas songs and carols too. If you are struggling to feel Christmasy then I recommend a trip here. Soup in the cafe before doing the house and tea and cake after, what could be better? Lovely volunteers too, thank you.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 12 December 2023

This house is well worth the visit, as are the gardens, which are simply stunning. You can easily spend the best part of an afternoon visiting if it is not raining!
The huge rooms are stunning. Make sure you also look at the display cases - look at the 'shell' boxes and the information about the family during the war especially.
There is a new, free app being trialled called Smartify which enables you to find out information about artwork in the house, although the WiFi signal in some rooms makes it a little difficult at times.
After the house, weather and mobility permitting, it is worth walking around the gardens, which are simply stunning (there is a huge lake at the bottom of the gardens, which when I visited had lots of ducks and ducklings as an added bonus).

Visited this house and gardens primarily to view the art works, which were brilliantly displayed. However, with the over emphasis on art there was very little of the house to see. The staff were informative as usual, but not a lot of history about the house and its occupants. Gardens were lovely, and we enjoyed our picnic.

Great tea room we were made so welcome by the lovely lady on duty
Forgot to get her name but only worked a couple of days a week and we went on a Tuesday.
What a nice lady with a great sense of humor.
Nice cakes and nice drinks
Gardens were very nice, found the house boring

We were staying in Banbury so thought we would come to visit, how glad I am that we did. Absolutely outstanding, the volunteers were all exceptional, friendly and knowledgeable, the house and art work was stunning, we walked around the gardens and then back to the car park for the 3 mile walk across the fields and back, we loved it and hold it up in our top national trust places to visit.

Lovely historic home that is more of an art gallery than a residence! Fascinating to learn about the Sevres porcelain collection - some from Catherine the Great and some from Louis XVI. We visited in April and I expect it’s much more spectacular with the roses and other flowers in bloom.

Although some of the gardens were closed, due to the wet weather, there is still plenty to see and sitting by the mirror pool is very peaceful.
The house is well maintained and the staff were very helpful, the porcelain and art were well displayed.
Cafe was well appointed and there was plenty of room.

Started off with a lovely walk with the dogs, most of the time they could be off the lead. Then back for a look round the house. Nice to see inside these houses but this is more like an art gallery. I did go to the cafe but as normal the prices are just so expensive. £3.50 for a can of coke. I do like to support the NT but i now find a cafe close by to eat.

First time visit to a real hidden gem. Typical British weather meant we dashed straight to the cafe as the heavens opened on arrival. Excellent choice of food and drink with plenty tables to sit at. We then to chose to walk the grounds which took around 45 minutes which were lovely in the Spring, some areas were closed due to the time of year. We then visited the house which has an excellent collection of art including old masters and serves porcelain. Definitely worth a visit.

For those who love art this is the house for you. Mainly an art gallery, it is nicely laid out and, unlike many NT properties, there were plenty of places to stop and sit. I like to be left alone by volunteers until I ask for interaction and I feel some contact intrusive. An enjoyable visit and the cafe was nice.

It is my understanding that In line with the requirements placed upon Upton when The House and its fabulous art collection were handed to the Nation in the late 1940s the local hunt meet at the front of The House on Boxing Day and then ride out to commence hunting. No hunting takes place on Trust land. The surrounding land is in private hands and zThe Trust has no say in what they allow to happen on their land. As a volunteer I opt to avoid the Hunt, I have no time for this practice and on a very personal level wish it did not happen.

Hi,
I am visiting with family for a birthday and we’re trying to find somewhere for lunch nearby that won’t break the bank. Any ideas please?
There is the pavilion restaurant at the property but we are a largish group and they may not be able to accommodate us.
Thank you in advance.

My idea would be to ring Upton and find out what they suggest. The staff are so helpful - they may be able to help you plan your visit so that you can use the restaurant. The food at Upton is excellent and caters for all. If they can not accommodate for any reason, they may know an alternative.

Hello Nori,
I can confirm that this wonderful piece of art takes pride of place in an Art Gallery in the house. I spent a lot of time admiring the various paintings around Upton House and this was one of my favourites. Thank you for inspiring me to spend more time admiring these paintings.
