BURNED

When MacKayla Lane’s sister is murdered, she leaves a single clue to her death—a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone. As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, while at the same time, the ruthless V’lane—an immortal Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women—closes in on her. As the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book—because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of both worlds in their hands.

“The only other calling I ever felt was an irrepressible desire to be Captain of my own Starship. I was born in the wrong century and it wasn’t possible, so I chose to explore the universe by writing fiction instead. Books are doors to endless adventure.” -KMM

Karen Marie Moning is the #1 NYT bestselling author of the Fever Series and Highlander novels.

An alum of the Immaculate Conception Academy, at seventeen she attended Purdue University where she completed a BA in Society & Law, with minors in Philosophy, Creative Writing and Theatre, while working full time as a bartender and computer consultant. She intended to go to law school but after an internship with a firm of Criminal Attorneys, decided against it. For the next decade, she worked in insurance, where she wrote intercompany arbitrations and directed commercial litigation. At the age of thirty, she decided it was time to get serious and do what she’d always wanted to do: write fiction novels.

Beyond the Highland Mist was published in 1999 and nominated for two RITA awards. She then published six more novels in her award-winning HIGHLANDER series, and received the RITA Award in 2001 for The Highlander’s Touch.

In 2004, she began writing the #1 New York Times bestselling FEVER series. The books have been optioned twice for potential franchise development by Twentieth Century Fox and DreamWorks Studios, but the rights are currently held by Moning who has expressed a desire to one day see it as a television series. Her novels have been published in over thirty countries. She divides her time between Ohio and Florida and is working on two future projects for Random House Publishing.

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.” – Jorge Luis Borges

Surprised

I'm not sure what I expected...a typical urban fantasy series, I suppose. What I got was much more. Intelligently written. Unique premise. Book 6 fell flat for me but book 7 changed it all again. I've not enjoyed a series in this genre more.

The Fever series is a thrilling and mysterious urban fantasy series that (mainly) follows the FMC, Mac on her journey after the fae realm melds with the world. Mysteries abound including who/what she is, who/what her mysterious employer is (Barrons), what the fae want, etc. etc. So many mysteries.

The first five books follow Mac and are my favorites.

The sixth book ("Iced") is from Dani's perspective (she's fourteen, I believe) and isn't as good (in my opinion). The sixth book is also a shift in the entire tone of the series. From book six and beyond the story is more disjointed and less cohesive.

The seventh book ("Burned") switches back to Mac's perspective (which I liked), but the entire tone of the story is so different. Lots of things have changed and while there's still a lot of new mysteries, the books from this point forward are much slower paced than the first books in the series.

I'd highly recommend the first five books of the series. After that they are okay, but not nearly as good as the first five. And book five wraps up nicely enough that you don't HAVE to keep reading, but you can if you want.

I really enjoyed books 1-5. I thought the plot twists, mystery, romance and alternate worlds that the author created were engaging and creative. I liked that the series didn’t take itself too seriously-it was dark at times , but also fun and kooky: it wasn’t ever trying to be High Fantasy. I even liked Iced for the storyline, but agree with other readers that it ventured into some pervy territory. The only book I really couldn’t relate to was Burned. I read somewhere that KMM dramatically altered the plot after some of the bad press surrounding Iced and that would make sense: the book seemed disjointed. I thought Mac’s character arc regressed somehow, Barrons was lame, I really hated what happened to Dani’s story, and throughout the book I had this feeling of suspended motion-I kept waiting for something epic to happen, but it never did. I also hate that Mac was positioned as a complete bimbo in this book. We all know from Book 1 that she’s not academically gifted, but she has her own brand of intelligence that she wields; a kind of EQ as opposed to IQ. I saw none of that in Burned.

Over all I liked the series, but I can’t seem to get my head around why every single sex scene is borderline rapey and geared towards male gratification! I’m surprised that a female author would assume the perspective that KMM chose and I’m curious why. Why not let the ladies dictate the terms for a change? The alpha-male bullshit gets a little old after a while.

I plan to continue reading and see where KMM takes the Fever series. I hope Dani and Mac return as better versions of themselves and maybe we see a bit more female empowerment.

SOFT CORE SPOILERS
This is my review for 1-10. I binge read and listened to the series any chance I could get. So maybe if I took a breather I would’ve given it 5 stars. The series is so unique and one of a kind. I’m really sad to move on.
Over time I did find myself honestly tire of Mac and Barrons. I love them. But their personal attitudes and stubbornness never eased up. Macs personal monologues I swear just kept rephrasing the same thing. Over the span of the series(10 BOOKS) nothing really seemed to change, or add to their characters. So I found myself skimming areas when they were introduced.
BUT I absolutely adored Dani and Ryodan and they are what kept me reading. (On top of characters like Lor and Shazam) Both of their characters seemed to have more substance, growth and their relationship is less push and pull. They focused more on the issues than the past that was haunting them, leaving a productive story line.
10TH BOOK ENDING WAS WORTH EVERYTHING. She tied so many little things together that made me audibly gush. I am hoping Dani, Ryodan, and shaz have a book dedicated to them and their battles one day.
All n all, great series and a great read. I really hope to get to know the nine more in the future though. Maybe make a series similar to highlander but about the nine?? I don’t know, fingers crossed!!

This isn't a series that will make my favorites list. It may have been better digested if I'd read it one book at a time with a breather in between rather than an omnibus.

It isn't until the third book that any real sex occurs, up until then it's a lot of frustrated sexual repression and more Urban Fantasy with a indecisive "too stupid to live" hero. It felt like the author couldn't decide whether to write an adventure or a romance. Further into the series it becomes obvious that this is another Superman loves Lois Lane Romance. The standard obsessive/possessive relationship by the lonely immortal with superpowers and the Innocent but spunky girl.

Shadowfever (#5) was annoying. Mac, our Hero, loses her way, goes to the dark side and has an emotional breakdown which was just boring to read.

As with many Romance novels the inner dialogue is tediously detailed. The series has a decent world structure and characters with a good amount of action. But it is also trashy romance with fairies instead of vampires or werewolves.

There is just so much wrong with this series. From the blatant abuse to the sexism to plot holes. Not even half way through book one and the love interest has already physically abused the protagonist. How is that hot?!? All the male characters are all about sex and showing their superiority at any cost. While the women are weak and just need a man to help them become their true selves. Let’s not forget the blatant criticism of the Irish. Literally going on and on about how everyone is Ireland is so horrible and nasty.
Then I’m skimming through most of these books because it is so repetitive and droning on and on about insignificant details but skimming over important events. The writing is very confusing and can be very vague then super detailed for no conceivable reason. I’m not even sure I even fully understood what was going on when I was actually trying to read and comprehend this.
Also there is never any resolution. Interesting TID bits are thrown out but then nothing. Why even mention it?

This author has an amazing imagination and obviously did a lot of research. I loved all the characters and the plot, while really complicated, mostly held together really well. amazing world building. She used tremendous restraint building the relationship between the H/H in books 1-5. i know some people had issues with the heroine but it really was amazing to watch her change from a sheltered, self centered, kind young woman who worked more about manners and appearances to someone who had to let go of the past, embrace what she had while fighting to keep it.

I was turned on to this series by my daughter-in-law and immediately went off to Overdrive to check for the books. I found this great boxset of the first 7 books and immediately checked it out via Amazon. I am not going to even attempt to tell you about each book because I read them one after the other until I was done. It is a great series and I have already checked out book 8 so I can continue. You will love it if you love books about humans interacting with Fae and other impossible beings. It contains a little bit of everything from grief to an apocalyptic event that changes the world forever. MacKayla realizes that she never really knew herself, or her sister. She is thrown into a world of the supernatural and she will never be able to go back to the "pretty Southern girl" image of herself or the rainbows and unicorns view of the world she once held. Enjoy.

Had to force myself to finish the first book cause I really REALLY wanted to give this series a chance. But it's so poorly and carelessly written, the characters are so cliché and especially the protagonist is so superficial that it's hard to bear. Very cringy. It's a shame cause the plot is a really good idea (in theory) and the creatures described are great in theory too. Moning sadly did not deliver enough to get me to read the other books or recommend this to anyone with a higher IQ. I have no idea how she managed to get this published.

The world Moning creates is really inventive and fun, but overall there were too many threatening sexual vibes and the constant lack of plot resolutions was draining. Maybe my expectations were off as I had seen this promoted as an urban fantasy/romance, so I expected the sexual interactions to be happier than they were. Also, like many of the others reviewing I would give yourself a break between books, I eventually got drained entering into the 4th book and I did a speed read on the last 3.

This series ruined ALL other books and series for me. I will never again feel the way I felt when I read this series and now no other books can compare. Stepping into this world was the best decision I ever made but oh so bittersweet when it ends. I am on my (atleast 10th) re read and I got just as sucked in as I did the first time I read it. 100/10, hands down my favorite series there ever was and ever will be.

ALL TIME favorite series. This is my comfort series, I re-read and re-listen to this series constantly. Perfect amount of fantasy, sex, adventure/violence! The characters are immaculately written and you feel like you know them personally. These books really hook you in and have you as invested in their lives as they are.

I read the first one. Eh. Decent.

The second one... Omg how much misogyny do we have to tolerate in these books? There is gonna be a special place for women writing books that continue these narratives about women ... I'm just done, folks.
