Ray is the tritagonist of the 2016 Japanese fantasy thriller manga series The Promised Neverland and its 2019 anime television series adaptation of the same name.
Ray learned the secret of the orphanage and from a young age began plotting a method of allowing his two best friends Emma and Norman to escape the facility.
He is voiced by Mariya Ise in the Japanese version of the anime and by Laura Stahl in the English version.
Appearance[]
Ray has dark green eyes and black hair. He is identified by his ID number 81194 on his neck.
He wears the standard uniform for Grace Field House orphans, which is a white shirt and white pants.
In the manga, as the anime deviated from the original source material, he grew taller after escaping (up to 5'7").
Personality[]
Besides his ave.2 292 on a test, he scores an average of 300 (the highest score) in Grace Field House's exams. He's aloof and prefers to read books than play with his siblings. He keeps them safe many times, even if he argues with them. Ray is outspoken and has almost no patience. He has proven himself to be a bit too straightforward, as he straight-up told Emma that he's been spying for Isabella.
According to the information that Krone, one of Grace Field's former caretakers, got, Ray makes plans quickly, but gives up on them just as fast.
He's very self-sacrificing, as he planned to set himself on fire to make sure Emma, Don, Gilda, and the others succeeded in escaping the House. After seeing their caretaker walk his siblings to their deaths, he developed an extreme guilt, thinking suicide was the only way to atone.
However, after seeing just how much his siblings prepared for the escape, he loves his family even more and says that he's glad to see them still safe. He no longer keeps secrets and starts to heal from his trauma.
History[]
He is the only biological child of their caretaker who is "Mama" Isabella, he did not experience childhood amnesia, confirming his suspicions about the existence of demons and true nature of the house later when he was 6 years old.
Ray was one of many children raised in an orphanage that secretly doubled as a farm for human flesh. The runner of the orphanage raised the children to have healthy active brains and then would present them to Demons who would consume the children.
Ray becomes Isabella's spy in exchange for goods and the promise that he, Emma and Norman could live their lives to the fullest, pledging to use the remaining 6 years of his life to orchestrate a plan that would lead to his two best friends finding out the truth themselves.
After a confrontation from Norman, he becomes the children's trump card just as Isabella betrays him. Although initially unwilling to accept Emma's unrealistic goal of escaping with every child, he vows to never give up on them after their escape succeeds.
