Martha Korok Prof. Richard Harris English 114, Section 09 24 th Oct 2021 The Sick Heart River The hero is a novel authored by John Buchan as he reflects his ow ’s quest measures in Sick Heart River n struggles with illness. The main hero in this adventure story, Sir Edward Leithen sets out to find Francis Gaillard who left New York in search of his ancestral graves. Leithen made this decision after being diagnosed with advanced tuberculosis and making a resolution to “die standing. “The journey of finding Gaillard turns out to be a journey of self -realization, drawing him close to spirituality and taking him great physical and psychological effort to be accomplished.

Sir Edward Leithen’s journey turns out to be a journey of internal realization and of transition into a spiritual being. Francis Gaillard left New York and disappeared without informing his wife, Felicity. The latter informs her uncle, Blenkiro, about the incidence. Blenkiro then turns to Leithen to help him find his niece’s husband. At the time, Sir Edward Leithen has been diagnosed with advanced tuberculosis and given roughly a year to live. He accepts the task for he must die standing as Vespasian said an emperor should (Part 1 Ch Par 18). Leithen was raised in Calvinistic household, and though he wasn’t dedicated in religion. “... he always had an acute sense of sin” (Part 1. Ch Par 12). Leithen then sets out to the Canadian North in search of Gaillard with the help of Johnny as his guide. They first arrive at Ghost River and couldn’t find them, but they were able to trace their footprints. On their way, they found Gaillard in bad condition, already abandoned by Lew. Lew’s mind has been clouded with Sick heart river. Galliard wasn’t in his right mind thus Leithen decides to go look for Lew and bring him him back for the sake of sanity of Galliard. At Sick heart river, Leithen felt God’s

mercy shinning uupon him like a sunshine (Part 2 Ch Par 6). He later realizes that the north had not just frozen him physically but also melted the ice in his heart (Part 3 Ch Par 18). He exalted the name of the most High not only as Almighty but also as all loving as well. He felt safe in the hands of God, regarding Him as his friend. Edward Leithen, who was sick at heart, underwent redemption of his soul at Sick heart river. He then returns and travels with his companions to Hare’s camp to help the dying Indians who suffered from blight and loss of hope of living again. Together with father Duplessis, they healed the Hares and strengthened their long-vanished hopes. A key theme is that Leithen, Lew, Galliard and the Hares are all sick at heart and going through mental issues. Leithen’s sickness made him less of a social being. When Clanroyden visited him, he couldn’t act friendly and have fun like the way he use to before. He spends most of his times thinking of what to do before his coming death, but he has never lost his right sense. When he rescued Galliard, he knew how to manage his present state of mind and knew exactly how Galliard can be heal from his trauma and weariness. He brought Lew to Galliard thus helping him come over his mental restlessness. Father Duplessis sent a letter to Leithen to offer him aid on helping the perishing Hares. Leithen sets off with is colleagues to Hare’s camp. On his arrival, he summons Chief Zacharias’ and inquires how best they really want to be helped. He understood the people’s mentality and offered his best to bring the community back to life. He holds conferences where he talks to the Hares, encourage them, and gives them directions. He orders them to light a fire in the center of Hare’s camp to enhance warmth and most importantly gives them hope of victorious ending in the face of their challenges.
