David Beckham has spoken about his enduring relationship with Victoria Beckham as he revealed their ‘ups and downs’.

In a candid new interview David, 49, revealed that he and Victoria, 50, reflected on their relationship and were ‘emotional’ because of the recent series about David’s career.

The sportsman explained that while watching Beckham, the recent Netflix docu-series, they questioned how they managed to make it through the troubles they have faced over the years to find such a ‘happy’ life now.

Speaking to Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett on their SmartLess podcast – on an episode set to be released on May 20 -the footballer spoke openly about his marriage.

‘That’s one of the things we both, me and Victoria, probably both get emotional about, and after watching the documentary after everything was over and we watched it finally, that’s the one thing that we looked at each other and was like, “I don’t know how we got through the last 27 years, but we did and we have an amazing family, amazing business and we’re happy.”

‘And yeah, of course, when you’re with someone for that amount of time, of course you have your ups and downs, everybody knows that and at the end of the day we were lucky because we had each other at those moments.

‘You know, she was a Spice Girl, I was playing for Manchester United, and even when we were going through the difficult times, we actually had each other to feed off and that was the best part.

He added: ‘Obviously, we were 21 and 22 when we met. We got married when we was 23 and 24 and we had our first son when I was 23, so as soon as we had our first son, Brooklyn, that also added another layer to the family and our responsibilities then were to our son.’

In the interview, David also explained that he was apprehensive about the documentary’s release, with fears that it was too soon to look back at his career.

‘To be honest I was nervous about the whole thing, you know? When I retired eight years before, or 10 years before, it was actually 10 years, they wanted me to do it there and then and I wasn’t actually ready to look back, I was ready to jump into something else, which was the club in Miami.’

He explained that the only reason he felt ready to participate at this point was because of his family, as he wanted to leave behind something for them.

‘In all honesty, one of the reasons why I wanted to do the documentary was for my family. I wanted them to have something all in one place for them to watch and for them to look back and reminisce. And that’s what really we created.’

The documentary covered a lot of hard memories for the Beckhams, including the rumoured affair with Rebecca Loos that dominated the press several years ago and some of the low points of David’s career.

However, the documentary was also filled with sweet moments that highlighted David and Victoria’s relationship, how the pair first got together in secrecy, and what their home life looks like now with their four children.

David Beckham’s episode of the SmartLess podcast is set to be released on May 20.
