The Beach Boys/ Surfer Girl & Shut Down Volume 2 (Capitol/Brother - two albums on one CD). It is a bit of a head scratcher why they didn't pair up the `Little Deuce Coupe' album with `Shut Down vol. 2' but we will consider this CD for what it is...which is Great.
The first album on this CD is `Surfer Girl', which is a five star album. Half the album is familiar radio hits and the rest of the songs are just as good.
The second album on this CD is `Shut Down Volume 2', which is a little weaker, but still a good album. It is a solid four-star album, but the horrible "Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson" cut is a bad omen of the Beach Boys love for giving us unless and irritating `behind the scenes' tracks that subtract from our enjoyment of the album (that tendency came into full bloom with all the junk they added to their 5 disk anthology box a few years ago).
There are also three bonus tracks: the single version of "Fun, Fun, Fun", a cool German language version of "In my room" and a nice song called "I Do"...and a little bit of additional nonsense at the very end.
If you are wondering where `Shut Down Volume ONE' is, `Shut Down' was a compilation LP from 1963. That LP included the songs "Shut Down" and "409" by the Beach boys (both songs originally from the Beach Boys `Little Deuce Coupe' album), plus cuts from The Cheers, The Super Stocks, The Piltdown Men, Robert Mitchum (yes, the actor), Jimmy Dolan, and The Eligibles. That album is NOT included in this CD (just to be clear) and good luck trying to find a decent copy of it.
Overall (and despite that horrible `..Vs.." track) this CD deserves Five Stars.
The only Beach Boys albums I bought when I was a kid was the greatest hits/best of compilations. I only recently realized I could have their early hits in stereo. So I went on a Beach Boys binge. I was very surprised to find that all of these albums have some real hidden gems. On the SURFER GIRL disc that includes "The Surfer Moon", "South Bay Surfer", "Surfers Rule" and "Our Car Club." All great songs! SHUT DOWN VOLUME 2 didn't have as many, for my likings. But "In the Parking Lot" was truly cool, and "The Warmth Of the Sun" is one of their must lush, beautiful ballads.
So, if you're a fan - long term or casual - chances are you'll get more than you bargained for with all of these releases.
Such a good album. Surfer Moon was introduced to me through this, and it blew me away how good their non-commercial material is (this was my first album besides Pet Sounds and the various greatest hits compilations I'd acquired). Simple, basic, fun 60s rock that's incredibly easy to get into if you know what you're getting into beforehand.
This is The Beach Boys, so I'm not going to review the music as most likely you already know the music and love it. I am reviewing the quality of the mastering on the Surfer Girl / Shut Down Vol. 2 "Twofer" CD. I have to say, for CD, it's very good but far from perfect. I also have Surfer Girl on on vinyl and SACD re-mastered by Kevin Gray and released by Analogue Productions. I have Shut Down Vol. 2 on vinyl also re-mastered by Kevin Gray and released by Analogue Productions. I did a A/B comparison to Surfer Girl on the HDCD to the recent Analog Productions SACD. The first thing I noticed is the HDCD version is a little overly bright and the vocals are a little un-natural. The new HDCD is also a tad louder (Louder is NEVER better, it means compression/limiting has been added). The SACD is more natural and warmer sounding. Most, if not all, mastering engineers will tell you is the only way to get the actual sound of the master tape into your home is SACD (or DSD but I don't do downloads). If you are not picky about sound quality, These 2-fer CDs are a great value and don't sound that bad. If you are looking for the best sound, the SACD (even the CD layer of the SACD) and vinyl from Analogue Productions, mastered by Kevin Gray sounds far better and represents what is on the master tape. Plus you also get the MONO version as well on the Analogue Production SACDs. I will personally be purchasing the entire Beach Boys' catalog on SACD from Analogue Producions.
GREAT EARLY STUFF BY THE BEACH BOYS. EVERY SONG IS GOOD. IT'S ALMOST A GREATES HITS ALBUM. NOTICE THE COVER. NO AL JARDINE OR BRUCE JOHNSTON. DAVID MARKS IS THE 5TH BEACH BOY. ALSO 2 ALBUMS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE.
Surfer Girl is really a great piece of work. Brian Wilson did a great job in the composition of the songs and they sound great in stereo ( In Sounds of Summer you only get these songs in mono) Shut Down Vol. 2 is alright album with some good songs as well ( Don't Worry Baby in stereo)I highly recommend this disc.
