Keine Kaufempfehlung !!!!!!
Collins headlines the picture as Fontaine Khaled, the bored and sexually voracious wife of an Arab millionaire, who spends her nights cavorting at her London nightclub, Hobo. There she employs 'The Stud', Tony Blake, played by the dashing Oliver Tobias, who services Fontaine's every whim both on and off the dance floor.
The screenplay, written by Jackie Collins from her own source novel published a decade earlier, moves at a brisk pace. Sets, lighting, costumes and music are all pitch perfect, acting as a time capsule for late 1970's London. Collins' performance as the oversexed socialite is tart and entertaining as Collins reaches her cinematic zenith as film's bitch supreme. Collins is at her best when Fontaine is at her worst. Tobias gives a good performance as the anti-hero in this film, never quite garnering the audience's sympathy. The supporting performances are also fine, 'The Stud' is a well cast film of mostly British movie veterans. Produced by Ron Kass and Oscar Lerman, the respective husbands of Joan and Jackie, it's evident that this film is a family affair.
Overall, the film is naughty fun. A bit of psychedelic nudity, some truly hilarious dialog and a story with the depth of a wading pool that is totally unapologetic. Highly recommended for any fan of either Collins sister and for those interested in a bit of unpretentious fun.
Best of all, KL recorded a commentary track with historians David Del Valle and Nick Redman. They provide a marvelous, witty, socially informative and surprisingly affection counterpoint to what's happening onscreen. In fact, the commentary is so delicious, and the movie's plot and dialogue so rudimentary, that one could just as easily watch "The Stud" over and again with just the commentary playing. It certainly spares one from that horrible music in the orgy scene.
Original review: Although the transfer sometimes suggests an old and well-worn print of the film, and it's in pan-and-scan, for the most part this trash-fest looks pretty good — as does Joan Collins, at her haughtiest and hottest as nightclub doyenne Fontaine Khaled. Ms. Collins gets her kit off several times, including in an extended orgy sequence (filmed by director Quentin Masters without a hint of eroticism) and, let's face it, that's why you're buying this movie. Vaya con dios. Sidekick Sue Lloyd is pretty spicy as well.
If you're really interested in plot and characterization (all three of you), the former is almost impossible to follow, given the prevalence of English dialects, and the latter surprisingly good coming from a cast of unknowns. As the title character, Oliver Tobias is eye candy for the ladies but also manages to work up a more sympathetic portrayal than one would expect. Disco music, mostly by 'Biddu' is omnipresent and there are lots of scenes on the dance floor, to bulk the film up to feature length. Like its successor, "The Bitch," "The Stud" gets to its climaxes quickly and entertainingly, and has the bonus of a leading man who can act. It mainly created a new generation of Joan Collins fans and, for that, deserves a remote niche in the cinematic pantheon.
