The Debian name is used for two different subjects:
The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. This operating system that we have created is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short. (read more http://www.debian.org/intro/about)
The operating system(s) created by the above mentioned Debian Project (and contributors). Currently Debian GNU/Linux and Debian GNU/kFreeBSD have been officially released.
