Technically I should be disqualified from scoring Kongens Nei [The King's Choice] (2016) as it's a movie that triggers all the nationalistic senses and what it is to be a Norwegian. Such an amazing intimate feel into the days of April 1940 when Hitler invaded Norway. Only real criticism is that Anders Baasmo Christiansen didn't really convince me he was Olav. I'm not saying he did a bad job as an actor. It's just that he's a very different person then how I remember and considered Olav to be. But Jesper Christensen as King Haakon.... just WOW! So real it takes ones heart and transports it back to the days the war started for us.

As a Norwegian-American in the year 2017, a film about Norwegians standing up to fucking Nazi scum is exactly the catharsis I needed right now.
watched this for class and i really enjoyed it. it was nice to know what was happening in norway alongside what was happening in denmark at the time.
they did use the wilhelm scream so i almost laughed during the movie, and also the cinematography was weird at times. but other than that, very good.

This was a very well done and strong movie. I am of Norwegian heritage and I had not known the details how Norway was invaded by Germany in April of 1940. The film was excellent. It focused on King Haakon VII , his family and the decisions he made. The King said “We give our all for Norway”. And he was strong. This is a powerful film to watch.
Some (historically imbued) powerful stuff early on, but way too much time is wasted by uninteresting personal drama within the royal family, so clearly trying to make a mainstream "movie" out of this historical event. A lot of biopic-itis. It also does way too much to make everyone except the king into cowardly and/or incompetent fools. This is a piece of history that on its own proves that the monarchy isn't all bad, but maybe let that speak for itself instead of making this Great Man Standing Up Against The Idiots narrative? It makes everything boring and is so lazy, even without the political implications. This movie is visually competently directed to be sure and continues a line of recent (last 5-10 years) projects showing that big budget Norwegian movies don't need to be embarrassed about surface details. Now, if we only could get the writing of these projects sorted out, maybe people elsewhere would start giving a shit?
I'm as anti-royalist as they come. I consider patriotism a joke at best and a precursor to nationalism and imperialism in its extremes. But Norway in WWII, there's something hard-coded into me. Enough to give me a chill at the conversation between King Haakon and private Seeberg.

Beautiful! Fucking love this movie, the king and then Crown Prince Olav was portrayed fantastically. I feel very proud that these two brave men were the kings of our great nation.
The scene at Oscarsborg Fortress where they sank Blücher is one of my favorite scenes from this movie. Its amazing that a fortress from 1855 took out one of Germany's mightiest ships in the first few days of the invasion.
