Translation options for Sermon on the Mount
The Sermon on the Mount Weekly Playlists feature the NASB, NIV, and The Message, as well as a new BibleProject translation from our team of scholars.
What is the BibleProject translation?
Our scholar team created a new translation specifically for Matthew 5-7 with two goals in mind:
- To preserve the literary design when identical words and repeated phrases are in the Greek text, by making them function similarly in English—no matter how often a word or phrase gets repeated.
- To use words and phrases that convey the same meaning but give new vitality to phrases that have become overly familiarized. Some words might sound strange, but these translation choices are a more literal rendering of the Greek text into English.
Is your scholar team translating the whole Bible?
We don't currently have any other portions of Scripture that feature this collaborative translation work from the scholar team.
How to choose a translation
What translation should you read? As many as possible! Reading the same passage with several translations will help you notice new things in the biblical story.
Since the Bible was written in a different language, time, and culture, translating it into a modern language requires an element of interpretation from each biblical translation team involved. Reading and hearing the same passages and stories in different translations offers new insights into the biblical text and encourages repeated listening and meditation.
