A powerhouse lineup of great free improv musicians, Live at Tonic is a cathartic, cacaphonous romp. Chris Corsano's steady variation on the drumming stylings of Rashied Ali anchors the feedback squall of Thurston Moore's guitar/amplifier and the dual saxes of Shoup and Paul Flaherty. At times, they conjure up powerful moments from Charles Gayle's "Jesus Christ and Scripture" and John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Cambridge 1969." This is pretty powerful stuff not for the faint of heart. While it lacks the power of something like, say, Brotzmann's Machine Gun, it is nonetheless a very strong performance. Highly recommended to noise aficionados.
