One of a slew of gang movies that hit theaters in 1979, SUNNYSIDE is "We got THE WARRIORS at home!" starring "We got John Travolta at home!" Yes, with John Travolta a global pop culture phenomenon after WELCOME BACK KOTTER, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, and GREASE, his four-years-older brother Joey tried to get a piece of the action, first with a 1978 album where his cover of "I Don't Wanna Go," a hit just a year earlier for The Moments, almost cracked the Top 40.
Then he tried to parlay his younger brother's zeitgeisty fame into a movie career with SUNNYSIDE, a boring Queens-set gang drama where Nightcrawlers leader Nicky (Joey T., sounding like his little brother but lacking all of…
Joey Travolta tries to unite the neighborhood gangs to stop the local carnival from doing the sneaky carnival things that all carnivals do. It's a weird thing to focus on. Also, it goes badly. Notable cast of "oh hey, that guy!" guys.
Kind of like West Side Story but it’s Nightcrawlers vs Warlocks, no singing/dancing, way more (too many?) gang members, and the Nightcrawler hangout is a deli/discotheque combo that looks like an Olive Garden.
Also still not over how Joey Travolta’s “I’ll have 86 tuna sandwiches” succeeded as a pickup line
Kinda basic low-budge Warriors style NYC gang movie from 1979, An AIP production.
Unfortunately, Joey doesn't have the same appeal on the big screen that his younger brother has shown. Plus, this story of a young hood trying to go straight is boring. Joey should stick to singing.
MUTHA FUCKIN SHIT GODDAMIT WHY????????? Yes Why one must ask, possibly to capitalize on the success of THE WARRIORS.
Poop fest with John Travoltas brother Joey. Poorly directed film has terrible transitions and scenes where characters just appear. There are spots where you can tell the film is padded to make it longer. 100 mins of stupid dialog, well worth receiving the dishonor of being Siskels dog of the week, back in 1979.
