'Criminal Minds' showrunner exits series

Simon Mirren reportedly decides to quit his role as co-showrunner on Criminal Minds.

Criminal Minds showrunner Simon Mirren has reportedly decide to leave the show.

Deadline reports that Ed Bernero and Erica Messer will continue to serve as executive producers on the CBS drama.

Mirren, nephew of actress Helen Mirren, was originally promoted to showrunner alongside the pair at the beginning of the fifth season, following the departure of Chris Mundy.

He is now said to be finalising an overall development deal with Sony Pictures TV. His new contract is expected to commence once his current deal with Criminal Minds expires at the end of the current season.

Prior to joining the show in 2006, Mirren worked as a producer on CBS's Without a Trace from 2003 to 2004 and NBC's Third Watch from 2004 to 2005.

Criminal Minds continues on Wednesdays at 9/8c on CBS.
