European royals in the British line of succession: Denmark’s Royal Family

Continuing our series, Royal Central is taking a look at the members of Denmark’s Royal Family who are in the British line of succession.

Frederik IX of Denmark married Princess Ingrid of Sweden on 24 May 1935. Princess Ingrid was the daughter of Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf (later King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden) and his first wife, Princess Margaret of Connaught. The Princess was the elder daughter of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, who was the third son of Queen Victoria.

Her uncle, Edward VII, wanted Margaret and her younger sister, Princess Patricia of Connaught, to marry a European king or crown prince. During a trip to Cairo, Margaret met Prince Gustaf Adolf. Originally, Margaret’s sister Patricia was considered the more suitable match for Gustaf Adolf. Without his knowledge, a meeting was arranged with the two sisters. Gustaf Adolf and Margaret met and fell in love at first sight. The two were married at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on 15 June 1905.

Margrethe is the Queen of Denmark. Upon her father’s death in 1972, Margrethe succeeded to the throne at the age of 31. She became the first female Danish sovereign under the New Act of Succession.

The Act of Succession of 27 March 1953 made Margrethe the heir presumptive. The act was a constitutional amendment that allowed a woman to inherit the throne in the event she has no older or younger brothers. Frederik IX and Ingrid had three daughters and no sons. With Margrethe as the heir presumptive, her uncle, Prince Knud would no longer assume the throne once Frederik IX passed away.

Born in 1968, the 52-year-old is married to Australian-born Mary Donaldson (now Crown Princess Mary). Prior to their marriage, Mary worked with several companies in advertising.

Vincent was born 8 January 2021, 26 minutes before his twin sister, Josephine.

In 2009, the Danish constitution was altered to grant absolute primogeniture to the Danish throne which means that the eldest child, regardless of their gender takes precedence in the line of succession. Prior to this rule, Vincent would have displaced his older sister Isabella’s place in line to the Danish throne. He does, however, precede his sister in the line of succession to the British throne.

Isabella was born on 21 April 2007. She was the first girl born into the Danish Royal Family since the birth of her great-aunt, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece in 1946. Isabella is third in the line of succession to the Danish throne. However, because her younger brother, Vincent, was born before changes to the British laws of succession, Isabella is behind him in this line to the throne.

Editor’s Note: These are estimates as to the royals’ place in the British line of succession. As of 2011, Queen Margrethe II was 322nd. Since then, there have been 14 babies born to those in the first 100 places; therefore, we added 14 to the 2011 calculations to account for those births. We added a further 25 to the calculations to account for births in the German, Norwegian, Russian, Swedish and Serbian royal families after 2011. Any children who have been born to those further down the line of succession have not been accounted for, so the Danish royals could be a bit further down the line of succession.
